... Ranchers in Texas oppose the fence because it will separate livestock from their source of water, the Rio Grande. Environmentalists say the fence will have the same effect on wildlife. Even the Bush administration's own Interior Department has expressed worries about harm the fence might do to the environment Mr. Chertoff says he's protecting.
The fence also will cut across the campus at the University of Texas at Brownsville. Local economies that rely on eco-tourism to the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge will suffer.
"Why they keep focusing on this border issue," El Paso Mayor John Cook told the El Paso Times, "acting as though the 9/11 terrorists are going to come back from the southern border this time is beyond me" ...
But putting up a metal fence is something any fool can do. And the president will do it because he can and he is.
