But the raid proved a fiasco. News coverage described families torn apart. Pyle was later voted out of office, and all the polygamists who had been arrested — and their children — returned to Short Creek ...

1. Yes, but that was Arizona
with a large (even larger % in the 50's) Mormon population. This is Texas, and they don't like weirdos.

2. Note that the weirdos are in Texas, Arizona, Colorado
and Mexico. They've been wise enough to stay the hell out of New Mexico.

Even the meek and mild castrati of the Heaven's Gate cult found this state inhospitable to cults.
