Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World

By JOSH GERSTEIN, Staff Reporter of the Sun | April 21, 2008
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing.

Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.

“Where’s the rice?” an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. “You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous.”

The bustling store in the heart of Silicon Valley usually sells four or five varieties of rice to a clientele largely of Asian immigrants, but only about half a pallet of Indian-grown Basmati rice was left in stock. A 20-pound bag was selling for $15.99.

to get to the store and stock up on staples. Earlier today I listened to Kevin Phillips discussing the economy on last Thursday's Diane Rehm show (one of the few remaining worthwhile programs on NPR -- at least some of the time)

Then I read the article in the OP on lifeaftertheoilcrash.com

Now I am

:scared: :scared: :scared:

Why aren't any candidates discussing these issues. Oh, I know. It's because the MSM would rather talk about lapel pins.

:kick:

Edited for correction.

4. MSM, discuss this w/any sobriety?-never-the ratings would drop
faster than the Dow does almost every other day now. Potential or real bad news is NEVER a crowd pleaser-keep the pacification going that's the name of the game.

5. We've deluded ourselves into believing that the U.S. is supremo in everything.
The best health care system.

The safest, most abundant food supply in the world.

The best military in the world.

and on and on.

When I was in journalism school, if anyone wrote statements such as those written above, one of my instructors would write in big, red print, 'SAYS WHO?'

Maybe we do have these things listed above and other things that are best in the world. But, is this according to some credible source, or is this just more chest thumpin from patriotic 'muricans?
