No black, please; we're pure white Indians
23 May 2008, 0528 hrs IST,Jug Suraiya

If further proof were needed that we Indians are white supremacists, who hold in scorn all that is dark, it has been provided by two recent instances, both reported on the same day.

In one case, two 'dark-skinned' IPL cheerleaders for the Mohali team were allegedly asked to leave the stadium by representatives of the event management company orchestrating the show. While the company in question has denied the charge, there is no denying our in-built prejudice in favour of a whiter shade of pale, as evidenced in everything from matrimonial ads seeking 'fair complexioned' brides to the impressive sales figures of skin whitening creams.

The second demonstration of our desire to be whiter-than-thou concerned the colour not of skin but of money. It seems that our powers-that-be are less than enthusiastic about taking up an offer made by the German government to reveal the names of individuals and institutions who have parked undeclared boodle in a bank based in the tax haven of Liechtenstein.

Cynics might interpret the reluctance on the part of the Indian authorities to receive and make public the proffered information as circumstantial evidence indicating the presence of scandalous skeletons lurking in foreign financial cupboards, spectres of Bofors and after.

3. yes it is... Its a huge industry.. fake spray tans and cremes and the UV lamps
and then not to forget the week long escapes during the spring to Florida to get that tan that makes the co-workers envious.

4. Men
are just as guilty. I see many men walking around in a middle of a snowstorm with one hell of a tan. I just noticed your username...."glowing" ironic, isn't it? ;)

5. I used tan in a can at the beach last year
I'm really really white.

I didn't get it even and it turned orange. I looked like a creamsicle.

Not doing that again. I'll lounge in the sun in my intense pale glory!

:D

7. Really, I wish people would just be happy with themselves.. but huge
industries and monies are made off of people feeling inadequate about themselves.. hence the fake boobs, butts, facelifts, hair dyes, makeup (which I do where on occassion--only organic though)... but people throughout history have always adorned themselves or made themselves feel better with clothing and jewelry and makeups.

10. Uh-Oh....
Coming from a "bottle blonde" that uses make-up and goes "tanning" on occasion. I have more of an medium/olive complexion and "tan" once in a while as it helps more with my FMS than any med ever has. Something about warming the body does wonders. :)

Unfortunately, we're in a job market (or at least I am) where one needs to look "youthful" or else you're gone. Sad, but true.

8. It seems as though the paler-skinned one is...
the more "orange" they get from those creams. Some of them are costly, as well!

9. Got that "farmer's tan", eh?
Laughter is the best medicine. Don't know if I'd make it without it. :)
