Seattle P-I Memorial Day editorial: 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Badge of dishonor'

Say, why is it that when it comes to felons and the functionally illiterate, our military is willing to ask, tell and grant waivers, but when it comes to a homosexual, only don't-ask-don't-tell can sustain a military career?

That unenlightened, discriminatory policy has been the source of justifiable outrage among thinking Americans, gay and straight, and stories such as Maj. Margaret Witt's serve only to justify calls for eliminating the military's right to discharge a person based on sexual orientation.

... Witt's "honorable discharge" is a badge of dishonor for our country's military. We're rooting for her and all service men and women like her. May they succeed in taking down the archaic don't-ask-don't-tell policy for good.
