At 96, he says he's ready to go
But I sense he wants to hang around until November, to see for himself whether Obama wins the White House.

By Garrison Keillor

Never mentioned by name any alert reader will know who Garrison is writing about. The guy is of the stuff legends are made of.

2. No doubt about it
Louis Studs Terkel.

Born May 16, 1912. Just do the math and know where the guy lives and the answer is obvious.

He will still be with us come November.

3. I consider myself fairly alert
But 96, born on the day the Titanic sunk, and some involvement with organized crime in Chicago in the first half of the century doesn't help me much.

Ah - who's Studs Terkel? Off to google that.

4. Garrison is wrong about the Titanic
He's got the right year but the wrong date(s).

I think because he was using ALL CAPS that he was driving home a point about a legendary man whose affiliation with Chicago, politics, labor, music, et al should mean something to all of us 'working Americans.'

Just my two cents.

5. Read Studs' recently-published memoir.
The man is progressive enough to make you cry. Truly a solid citizen.

6. his "The Good War'
was SOOOOOOO much better than that shit book brokaw wrote. the 'greatest generation' was quite lame compared to studs. but it was published in the 80's. too soon.
i happened to pick it up at an estate sale. thrilled to find his 'hard times' too.
