As More Eat Meat, a Bid to Cut Emissions
Michel de Groot for The New York Times
The United Nations expects beef and pork consumption to double between 2000 and 2050.
By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL

STERKSEL, the Netherlands — The cows and pigs dotting these flat green plains in the southern Netherlands create a bucolic landscape. But looked at through the lens of greenhouse gas accounting, they are living smokestacks, spewing methane emissions into the air.

5. Good. That would actually be a super bonus from the downturn.
A meatless diet would be much healthier and cheaper too. What's not to love about it?

6. I think its something doable.. but I'm not sure we all have to go cold turkey.
I know that I became very anemic when I did the Vegetarian thing for a year.

7. That 's funny. My doctor always said to me "you are borderline
anemic" in my meat eating days. But never after I became a vegetarian 24 years ago - no more anemia. You do have to eat a healthy diet, not junk food. But it is much, much more economical.

12. I normally only eat meat twice a week, if that. Its not a necessity in our
household diet as a must have all the time with every meal. Which is good, because it is cheaper.

10. What kind of idiot believes that?
Eating a green{veg.} diet costs far more than a dense meal centered around meat. I buy all my meat at the discount bin. I can scarcely afford veggies to put in my stews and soups. And if you think you are going to have any easier time with the cattlemans assoc. than Oprah did, you are cracked. Veggies spoil so fast. You also have to shop more often. And actually plan your nutrition. And TRY to maintain that out. I can barely afford to eat, and FOOLS are thinking GREAT, the masses will only afford to eat your INSISTED diet. After we can afford to eat, then we can talk about FARTING.

11. My potatoes and frozen vegetables diet is pretty darn economical
Eggs are a bargain, I will admit.

One advantage of vegetarianism is that you don't bring salmonella microbes onto your kitchen counter and cutting board. bon appetit!

8. I have cut my meat eating in half
and working on a further reduction. After many years of bad habits, I am finally becoming more aquainted with a healthier diet.
