This is inside info from a poster at Alliance@IBM:
http://www.endicottalliance.org/jobcutstatusandcomments.phpComment 3/26/09: To Mainstream & IT Press: This is not a story about another 5000 layoffs in the sea of the millions already laid off. That\'s exactly how IBM wants you to report it. In fact, the recession and other layoffs are great cover for IBM. The real story is this is not a typical recessionary laryoff, pruning poor performers or re-balancing skills for client needs. This is a story about a deliberate and
systemmatic business strategy to replace 15-20K American workers each year with lower-cost BRIC workers. So far this year, it is
approaching 10K (5K in Jan; 5K today) with rumors of more to come in June and in the Fall. This is not a story about moving unskilled work to another country. The layoffs have included highly-skilled and experienced professionals - scientists with PhDs, MBAs, seasoned software developers, marketing experts, consultants, project managers and manufacturing workers. This is a story about throwing near-retirement workers into the layoff pool - and using some of the savings (not sent overseas) to hire lower cost & unsuspecting new college grads. Then IBM can say "See, we\'re hiring," and continue the relentless march to reduce investment in American workers. This is a story about the next AIG. Is IBM already too big to fail? Warning signs are everywhere about the IT industry. This is a story about restrictions that should be placed on Stimulus projects. IBM has no intention of hiring Americans or re-hiring those laid off. Stimulus projects should bar the participation of companies offshoring jobs, paying enormous executive salaries, not to mention corporate jets. American tax dollars and borrowed money that our children will have to pay back are funding the Stimulus. This is for the American economy - not other countries' economies. This is a story about national security -- the impact of critical networks, core industry data, government data, medical and bank records, inside info about electrical grid and other utilities -- in the hands of unstable and potentially unfriendly countries. This is a story that the same offshore fate awaits Sun's services contracts if acquired by IBM. This is a story about American corporate cultures that have lost sight of their most important asset -- the American people. IBM is non-union, but this has been a wake-up call to remaining employees. It's the little guy up against a steam roller with deep pockets. Ultimately, it\'s up to you, the press, to raise these issues. -20 years
