* there are 250 - 280 million firearms in the US
* 40 - 50% of US homes own a firearm, that's 120 - 150 million people http://www.americanfirearms.org/statistics.php#5Estimates vary widely, but there are a hell of a lot of firearm owners in the states.
Right now for some reason, people are buying firearms and ammo at unprecedented rates. It could be a fear of Democrats banning firearms and it might be investors moving money into weapons and gold hoping for a big profit. Investors have created bubbles before and will again.
But many in our Democratic Party push for "feel good" laws like the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban. True many in the base of the Democratic Party, especially those in the bigger liberal cities, oppose firearm ownership. But when you leave those anti-gun bastions you will find many states that allow licensed citizens to carry concealed weapons.
In 39 concealed-carry states, issuing officials may not arbitrarily deny a concealed-carry application, a practice known as Florida-style "shall issue". It is so named because Florida gained national attention for adopting this policy in 1987, leading to citizens of other states advocating similar measures, even though this practice had been adopted in Washington state in 1961.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concealed_carry_in_the_United_StatesThese states are to say the least "firearm friendly". And the gun owners in these states, if worried, will show up at the polls to vote for pro-gun candidates. The Republicans are very successful at painting Democrats as anti-gun, although many Democrat politicians receive high ratings from the NRA.
You could argue that they didn't show at the last election, but John McCain was a tired worn out politician with old ideas. While he was a Republican, he was no great friend of gun owners. After eight years of Bush the Junior even Republicans were pissed off at their party leadership.
The Republicans are scrambling to find support for their ideas. Wedge issues such as draconian gun control laws, pushed by Democrats, work to their advantage. Obama has the opportunity to be the greatest President for the common person in my lifetime. If the party leadership forces him to support laws such as a new AWB, they will only shoot themselves in the foot again. The midterms will be a disaster and our party will lose many seats in Congress.
