Urgent stuff - get the family together for this - VERY IMPORTANT REVELATION
The United States went to war in Iraq. The reason given since no WMD were found was because Saddam Hussein practiced TORTURE.

1. Yup. But we never practiced torture; just ask the Bush Administration
We used "enhanced interrogation techniques," which is a different kettle of fish entirely. :eyes:

14. So did the Shah of Iran...
And when Khomeini discovered the torture chambers they were so horrifying that he decided not to shock the world further by providing the photos. In other words, there were no torture chambers. And the Shah did not torture people. Except in the minds of naturally tortured people. Including CIA agents who planted the stories in the media.

History does repeat itself, doesn't it? Particularly with the Bushes. George HW Bush was head of the CIA about the time the first "revelations" about the Shah were made public.

15. Transcript of State of the Union (2004)
... Had we failed to act, the dictator's weapons of mass destruction programs would continue to this day. Had we failed to act, Security Council resolutions on Iraq would have been revealed as empty threats, weakening the United Nations and encouraging defiance by dictators around the world. Iraq's torture chambers would still be filled with victims terrified and innocent ... http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/01/20/sotu.transcript.3/index.html

16. Three reasons were given:
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 06:30 AM by JDPriestly
1) WMDs
2) Links to Al Qaeda
3) Hussein was an evil dictator who killed many people and imprisoned and tortured his own people.

Number 1 and 2 proved to be totally false. Number 3 remained and Bush claimed it sufficed to justify the invasion. The torture was not the only evil done by Hussein the Evildoer. But it was a major part of Number 3, which was the only reason for war that was left for Bush to cite.

Bush claimed we were bringing democracy to Iraq. They have held more democratic elections in the last couple of years, but in fact Hussein was "elected" albeit in fixed elections. Sound familiar?

moral excuse that we need to stop the torture. And Bush himself said the everyone must say that the world is a better place with Saddam gone (Executed because he tortured people). But then Obama wants to look forward at a war started by another evil man and hide from the responsibility of removing from society the man that advocates executioon for those who torture? Remember that Rice and Ashcroft and Powell and Card sat in the white house discussing the need for torture. McCain said Bush approved every case where torture was used. Remember that one detainee suffered WB'ing for more than 3 times a day for a month, another more than 183 times in a month.

DU'ers need to print a page that says "TORTURE IS OK IN THIS HOUSE" - Send it to the WH and ask Obama to hang it in a room where it can be seen often and by many.

8. Yup, that was one of their excuses
we were saying the same thing here at home the other day - big bad ol' Saddam used torture on his own people, so let's go save them.

Then we helped take down Saddam's statute to show how grateful the Iraqi people were for 'saving' them from the torturer.

In the meantime, the coup in the WH sinks our nation deeper into the abyss. Shame on them.

Welcome to DU, ThirdWorldJohn!
