Swine Flu, GOP Panic, Flip Flop
So we might have a pandemic of swine flu in our future? Rick Perry, who has decried help from Washington, is now wetting his pants and begging for help from. . . Washington. Meanwhile, who gutted the pandemic preparedness money from the Obama stimulus package? the GOP, led by Rove. But Rush Limbaugh is still a swine.

3. Get this... GOP sought to cut $870M from stimulus for pandemic flue prep...
http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat/430261?rel=hp_picks

When House Appropriations Committee chairman David Obey, the Wisconsin Democrat who has long championed investment in pandemic preparation, included roughly $900 million for that purpose in this year's emergency stimulus bill, he was ridiculed by conservative operatives and congressional Republicans.

Obey and other advocates for the spending argued, correctly, that a pandemic hitting in the midst of an economic downturn could turn a recession into something far worse -- with workers ordered to remain in their homes, workplaces shuttered to avoid the spread of disease, transportation systems grinding to a halt and demand for emergency services and public health interventions skyrocketing. Indeed, they suggested, pandemic preparation was essential to any responsible plan for renewing the U.S. economy.

5. Republicans already spent over $7 Billion for flu preparation.
Roche Madison is in that city following Hoffman-La Roche Inc.'s acquisition last year of Mirus Bio Corp., a privately held Madison biotech company, for about $125 million.

Bush details new $7.1 billion plan for flu preparation Published: Tuesday, November 1, 2005

Updated: Friday, January 9, 2009

WASHINGTON - President Bush outlined a $7.1 billion strategy Tuesday to prepare for the danger of a pandemic influenza outbreak, saying he wanted to stockpile enough vaccine to protect 20 million Americans against the current strain of bird flu as a first wave of protection.

6. That's good to know...
Thanks,

I gather the stimulus program asked for $870M on top of that to consider distribution and other unigue issues vis-a-vis the current economic crisis.

7. Did that work well?
Seriously, did the Bush investment in pandemic prevention work?

Thankfully, then, we don't have to worry about any old swine flu. Limbaugh, at least, is safe, I hear.
