Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'
Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'

2005

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.
Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

4. Not that I disbelieve this but I'm pretty sure Brother Thompson's screeds...
...are....ahem...not well received by the DU suits. He was, at one time, a card-carrying freeper and, while he may seem like one of us now, as of yet, he's failed to earn the trust of the reality-based community.

Still, this is consistent with everything we know about Bush's notorious ignorance and arrogance.

Gephardt: Stop the 'phony, macho rhetoric'

Bush 2003

"Anybody who wants to harm American troops will be found and brought to justice," Bush said. "There are some that feel like if they attack us that we may decide to leave prematurely. They don't understand what they are talking about if that is the case. Let me finish. There are some who feel like the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring 'em on."

To bad are loving X president and his always wise X VP Cheney would have seen action in Vietnam and the reality of war not 'phony, macho rhetoric'. Lack of intelligence from the CIA brought you War, BushCo says, not the numb nuts in office and the hypocrites in the media that only stood by and watched as tens of thousands die.

7. I never believed this.
It was reported by someone very unreliable - someone like Wayne Madsen.

As much as I despise Bush, this just doesn't sound like him, and would have been a stupid thing to say, even for him.

It discourages me that so many of us relay that anecdote as if we are certain it is accurate. It kind of has a life of its own, now. We've heard it repeated so much, it becomes accepted.

If you know of a credible author or reporter who can be a second source for it, I hope you'll let me know.

8. It's Doug Thompson's handiwork, and I agree that he has credibility issues.
But I disagree that this doesn't sound like Bush. In fact, it sounds exactly like something that coked up, sociopathic, petulant frat boy would say.

But, like you, I would appreciate seeing this verified by someone with a reputation better than ex-freeper Thompson's.

9. Thanks for that info.
But I still don't think it sounds sufficiently narcissistic for Bush.
