Fear in flower: Supermax lockup is plenty tight (Evans | Daily Camera)
By Clay Evans
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Every American remembers the terrifying day Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh joined with Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski and 1993 World Trade Center mastermind Ramzi Yousef in a spectacular criminal ultraconspiracy and battled their way out of Colorado's "supermax" prison in Florence.

No?

That's because there has never been an escape of any kind from any of the so-called supermax prisons in the United States. There is no reason to think there ever will be. Even if the U.S. closes the extra-judicial public-relations nightmare that is the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prisoners transferred to supermax facilities -- and they aren't going to county jails -- will stay there, safely locked away.

But to hear the Republican Party, locking "Gitmo" terrorists, alleged terrorists, enemy combatants (whatever you want to call them) up in a supermax 23 hours a day is -- no joke -- tantamount to nuclear war ...
