PITTSBURGH — As with anti-globalization protests in the past, organizers and attendees at the G-20 economic summit taking place here in the next few days, with President Barack Obama as host, have been setting up their own channels of communication to keep in touch, plan for direct action and get their message out.
Local organizers created an online map with possible protest sites.Participants have been twittering. Independent reporters have been filing their own articles and prepping radio broadcasts. One of the best all-purpose sites with updates from the streets is being hosted by Indymedia Pittsburgh. Local protest organizers have also circulated an annotated online map of sites for possible direct action on Thursday and Friday. Ordinary citizens have been documenting the truly huge police build-up and security preparations. Protesters have even pulled together a number of short videos highlighting their gripes with the global financial system; some bring a touch of humor, others, less so.
There is the standard footage and interviews from marches, put together by groups on their websites and personal blogs. Probably the best roundup video concerning the types of harassment that protesters have encountered was produced by Flux Rostrum, an activist and videographer who has attended and shot many of the protests
