...The president took to the airwaves yesterday to obfuscate about the war in Iraq. At the same time his latest poll numbers show that he has the lowest approval rating of any time in his presidency. The wondrous thing about the polls is not that they are low but that they are as high as they are. I attribute this solely to a hard-core right wing in this country that is as gullible as they are indifferent to the plight of others less fortunate than themselves. The president’s numbers are shored up by people who feel it is more important to identify themselves as Republicans than it is to be an American. A comprehensive list of the failings of George W. Bush would be a book not a letter to the editor. His failings during the invasion only serve to make us forget the failings of earlier in his administration, does anybody remember the spy plane the Chinese sent back to us in a million easy-to-assemble pieces. At the end of World War II German veterans of the First World War told their children, “Find an American and surrender to him.” After the Iraqi prison scandal, brought to us by Bush’s ignoring of the Geneva Conventions, does anyone think that advice will be given again? Still Bush will have his supporters, all of whom would applaud any Bush speech even if he only read from “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” This country, no the world, can ill afford another four years of Bush incompetence.
