Democrat Patrick Leahy was attending mass on a Sunday morning in July when a representative of the Traditional Values Coalition, appearing on C-Span’s “Washington Journal,” called the Vermont senator an “anti-Christian bigot.” The charge stems from Leahy’s opposition to the nomination of Alabama Attorney General William Pryor to the Atlanta-based 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

PRYOR IS A Catholic, and he testified in his confirmation hearing that his views on abortion are deeply rooted in his religious beliefs. He has called Roe v. Wade “the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history.” Democrats are united against Pryor’s nomination, and some Republicans are queasy about him, as well. For example, he filed a brief asking the Supreme Court to uphold the Texas law criminalizing homosexual conduct, which the court recently overturned. And he is a steadfast supporter of the Alabama judge who erected a religious monument to the Ten Commandments in the state’s judicial building, a move countermanded in the courts as an overt challenge to the separation of church and state.

1. Another front

The Radical Right (and I think we have to start calling these people radicals now, and not conservatives) opened this one up and they plan to work it for all it's worth. There were no less than four "think" pieces in Radical Right pubs this week trying to to pin anti-Catholicism on the left in general and Dems in particular. They're trying to connect the dots on the opposition to anti-abortion judges and sell it to mainstream Catholics as bigotry against them. This is something the likes of Cuomo, Kennedy, Leahy et al have to strike down immediately in a united show of outrage.
