Boehner handed out checks from Tobacco lobby to Congressmen BEFORE a vote on subsidies for Tobacco
Edited on Tue Oct-12-10 07:00 PM by JohnWxy
Let's not forget that it was Boehner who went around - on the floor of Congress - handing out checks from Big Tobacco, to other Republican 'members':

In 1995 Boehner passed around what some would call bribes right there on the floor of the House of Representatives. Remember, this would have been the first year that the Republican controlled the House and Senate in 40 years. Other conservatives were saying about 2006 that 12 years in charge had corrupted the GOP, but there they were grabbing checks from Big Tobacco just before an important vote on subsidies for that industry in the first year, that they were in control.

Boehner Shares Broad Network of Lobbyist Ties With DeLay

These facts are relevant since Boehner has said if he becomes the House Leader he plans on changing procedures. What, lobbyists will have free reign of the Capitol Building and Republicans have cash registers on their desks?

1. I don't understand why more isn't being made of this, both by his opponent and
the Dems nationally. A DUer was kind enough to give me a link to an interview where he acknowledged it but it was like "yeah, it was probably not the best place to do it but it's done all the time..." So maybe he's NOT the only one who has done this others are covering their asses?

Just the same, he's on tape!

3. Bob Herbert of the NYT agrees with you.....
That’s Where the Money Is

It’s beyond astonishing to me that John Boehner has a real chance to be speaker of the House of Representatives.

I’ve always thought of Mr. Boehner as one of the especially sleazy figures in a capital seething with sleaze. I remember writing about that day back in the mid-’90s when this slick, chain-smoking, quintessential influence-peddler decided to play Santa Claus by handing out checks from tobacco lobbyists to fellow Congressional sleazes right on the floor of the House.

It was incredible, even to some Republicans. The House was in session, and here was a congressman actually distributing money on the floor.

4. Great article, and thanks for the other links, too. WHY isn't this being screamed
at the top of every Democrat's lungs? We know if the situation were reversed... rhetorical question. Sigh.

5. Most likely because both sides have done it...
Dick Gephardt (Democratic House Minority leader) and some other Democrats were embarrassed in a similar incident about 14 years ago.

6. Yeah, not surprised although I hate to hear it. But Boehner is still there and he
just recently had the meeting with all the lobbyists and corporations - so it's current! Go get him! :grr:

Although I really don't think it'll happen, if he were to become Speaker I honestly think I'd lose it.
