U.S. to Let Insurers Raise Fees for Sick Children
By ROBERT PEAR
Published: October 13, 2010

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration, aiming to encourage health insurance companies to offer child-only policies, said Wednesday that they could charge higher premiums for coverage of children with serious medical problems, if state law allowed it.

Jay Angoff, a health and human services official, said the new policy was aimed at making child-only policies more available.

Earlier this year, major insurers, faced with an unprofitable business, stopped issuing new child-only policies. They said that the Obama administration’s interpretation of the new health care law would allow families to buy such coverage at the last minute, when children became ill and were headed to the hospital.

In September, the administration said that insurers could establish open-enrollment periods — for example, one month a year — during which they would accept all children.

Now, on Wednesday, the administration, answering a question raised by many insurers, said they could charge higher premiums to sick children outside the open-enrollment period, if state laws allowed such underwriting, as many do. ........................

1. That's because it wasn't 'reform', it was the Insurance Industry Profit Protection Act
I don't know why people are so surprised. It was obvious that this was going to be the result of that HORRIBLE piece of legislation.

2. Yes, this is one of the ways it will be impleted -played out in 3 years. Who
knows what will happen next. Waivers, more deductibles, etc etc. The bill signed into law has 'affordable" in its title but it will NOT be affordable to many-even with the subsidies.

4. Suprised?
When are the Obama apologists going to admit that the left of the party was right all along on this crappy Health "reform" bill? What can you expect when you let these insatiably greedy health industry CEOs dictate what's in the bill? This is just the begining.

Thank the fates my American mother married a Canadian and I grew up in a commie-pinko country.

Last January 2nd I went into a hospital emergency department feeling sick. I was admitted ASAP and it turned out I was full of cancer (Non-Hodgkins). I was in hospital till March 19th. (Saved a lot of money by living in hospital.)

Came out and was out-patient till August with daily home care visits from nurses and five chemo treatments as out-patient. What did I pay?

Zilch! Actually saved money.

My visitors paid a fortune for parking for which I thank them.

After my last chemo all the cancer was gone. For now. Hopefully for many years or forever.

Several folks have said, "If you lived in the US you would have had to sell or mortgage your house and your children too".

Maybe not but it would have cost me a bundle!

Obama never fooled me. I figure the powers behind the throne needed somebody less obnoxious than Bush to carry out their corporate crimes. It amazes me that most of my American cousins, affluent and well-educated, are rabid right-wingers.

They probably think Obama is "a socialist." Ha hah ha hah ha. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

Correction! I wouldn't have had to sell or mortgage my children. They would have had to sell or mortgage their houses also.

But what a good idea! Is it too late to sell them? Hmmmmmm.
