TUCSON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A surgeon at a Tucson hospital said he was "very optimistic" about Rep. Gabrielle Giffords recovery after surgery Saturday.

Giffords was shot in the head at a public event in Tucson. She underwent surgery at the hospital Saturday afternoon. At least six others were dead and 18 wounded, including the congresswoman.

The spokesman said, "The congresswoman is not deceased," contrary to some reports. "She is in critical condition ... I can tell you ... I am very optimistic about her."

The surgeon spokesman said Giffords was shot in the head, "through and through."

THank God for Ms. Gifford (now I believe in miracles).

Does this mean this is no big deal? ... that there is nothing to worry about?

Surgery can't replace destroyed tissue.

4. OK, assuming it was a miracle in someones eyes. Couldn't that omnipotent, omniescient
bestower-of-miracles have reacted a little bit earlier and prevented the shots and the killing of innocents? Or maybe it just wants everyone to pay attention to it because it made a minor correction to something it allowed to happen. No miracle here.

13. Giffords Doctor: "...it's wise to acknowledge miracles"

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is opening both eyes, moving both legs and arms and is responding to friends and family.

Her doctors call it a "major milestone" in her recovery. "We're hoping that she crosses through many more," said her neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Lemole. Her remarkable recovery five days after being shot through the head has provided a much-needed dose of jubilation after a tragic week that left the nation in mourning.

"Miracles happen everyday," he said. "In medicine, we like to very much attribute them to either what we do or others do around us. But a lot of medicine is outside of our control and we're wise to acknowledge miracles."

6. Time will tell how much brain damage she has.
And what the effect is.

Best wishes for her recovery.

11. OK i'll make the first dark joke
so you're suggesting this could make her a tea-party-er?

I hope she's ok.
I havent seen any details yet on the nature of the cranial damage.
I truly hope she's ok and undamaged (mentally) and ok physically.

9. No.. having competent medical professionals is a waste of time when you have miracles

There is a fantastic documentary about a doctor from Nepal who goes to North Korea to perform eye surgery on people with cataracts, and to train local doctors.

Upon removing the bandages to see for the first time in years, the patients all enthusiastically praise Kim Jong Il - with the doctor standing right there.

Today was a miracle done by God. God liked Mrs. Giffords more than the nine year old girl, apparently.

10. "Does this mean this is no big deal? ... that there is nothing to worry about?"

Any head injury can have profound consequences.

The fact that someone has survived is not "nothing to worry about".

You may recall that Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy survived having his neck bitten by a tiger (who may have been attempting to carry him as it would a cub). His survival and the extent of his recovery are astounding and inspirational, but he will never be the same person that he was.

15. the question was meant to emphasize the obvious which is a head shot is a terrible injury and just
because you have survived that doesn't say anything about permanent injuries or future quality of life.

But thanks for filling in the spaces for those few who might not have caught my rather obvious 'drift'.
