Reject Gonzales' nomination for attorney general
Were it not for the torture and some extremely damaging memorandums, Alberto R. Gonzales would be a fine choice to become the next attorney general of the United States.

Raised in poverty, Gonzales worked hard as a boy and went on to attend prestigious Rice University and Harvard Law School. He is regarded by many as a smart, skilled jurist with a long and an impressive résumé in law and public service.

But -- and it is a big "but" -- he is also the man who, as legal counsel to the White House, said it was OK for U.S. troops to abuse and humiliate war detainees who were in custody in Iraq and at the Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
