Martin Luther King on Vietnam:
I watched this program broken and eviscerated as if it were some idle political plaything of a society gone mad on war. And I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic, destructive suction tube.

Time magazine called it "demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." The Washington Post patronized that "King has diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people."

1. Has there since been....
...a man who understood so completely the errant course America has taken first with Vietnam, and now into Iraq?

Has there since been such a champion of the common man?

Martin Luther King. May God Bless your soul.

and marginalized by those in power

3. "Beyond Vietnam" and "I Have Been to the Mountaintop"
Today Democracy Now! played "Beyond Vietnam" and "I Have Been to the Mountaintop." You can hear them at:
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/01/19/1630238

Transcripts at:

(and elsewhere)

I wanted to post a few paragraphs to illustrate the importance of King's words for today, but every word he speaks here is relevant. Read them all. Print them out, read them over lunch or whenever you have a few minutes, and pass them on to a friend.
