"No Oscar for the Passion? That's outrageous!"
Honestly, that is a quote from a heated conversation this a.m. in a restaurant where I had breakfast at the airport. Another at the table corrected his friend about the fact that the film was not released in the previous year. Did that daunt our outraged duo? Nope, they switched to how the Passion would be "cheated" next year.

And I'll give you two guesses who will be behind it.

2. I wonder if it will even be nominated for any Oscars?
It'll either not be nominated at all, or be a very big winner.

18. I'm guessing it will be quietly forgotten at the Oscars...
There seems to be a massive resentment in Hollywood. The Writer's Guild has refused to show it at their screenings and I was suprised when my friend ( a Guild member) supported the decision and spoke with deep venom about the film and Gibson.

Personally, though I am a Hollywood Agnostic, I look forward to seeing the film and regard it only as a man's personal message of his faith, and perhaps a work of art.

In film school, I made some rather racy, semi-contoversial short films and ran them for my classmates. I was roundly criticized, denigrated and beaten up (figuratively) during the Q and A sessions afterwards. I know what it feels like to present a strong personal opinion or vision to a group-- you set yourself up for some real heartache. I guess that's to be expected.

The folks that unfairly critiqued my work would never voted for my films in a contest because of their content. The same will likely be true of the Academy members who are "offended" by Gibson, the film, the marketing or whatever.

I predict few if any nominations, but I could be wrong.

9. sort of...
it seems that it will be the "hollywood types" who hate Christians because they are all non Christian AND because they are liberal

A sensible person would then conclude that the "joos" are indeed included---well, if you were sitting 2 ft from them as I was you would not be indoubt from the inflection, euphemisms and gestures.

But, like Gibson, might as well look for trouble early so you can both explain it and "suffer" from it.

I wish I was suffering from a 117 million weekend gross income....

3. I find it bizarre
that people can become so emotional about such a meaningless event that has nothing at all to do with theirs or just about anyone else's lives.

7. Agree with you Art
These award shows seem so masturbatory to me.

Society will give you artists a camera and a great responsibility to show us what you want to show us.

And what they decide to show us is themselves giving each other compliments and awards.

Just a big circle jerk to me.

5. A lot of McChristians suffer from an odd persecution complex.
They absolutely have it in their minds that all Christians are routinely spat upon and non-Christians actively seek to prevent them from being Christians or participating in their churches. This is not true of all Christians. It's more endemic to the fundie sects.

It's quite pathological. It's both a persecution complex and paranoia complex where they not only see everyone as trying to prevent them from being religious, but they see everything as a hush hush conspiracy.

6. Tell them to try the "Pizza Test" sometime.
Grab a Yellow Pages, and compare the relative sizes of the Pizza Delivery section and the Churches section.

No one would argue that Pizza shops are harrassed, right?

It's ridiculous - they're supposedly persecuted, and yet the Churches section is almost always at least twice as big.

11. I just can't wait.
:eyes:

Sometime around December, O'Really will start to pimp "The Passion" as an Oscar contender, on behalf of his good buddy Melsie.

If "The Passion" isn't nominated for at least 12 Oscars, and doesn't win that many, O'Really and the rest of the talk radio crowd will scream to the high heavens (npi) about how Hollywood is anti-Christian and sooo sooo secular and blablablablaBLA!

Anyone know of a film that might knock "The Passion" off the Oscar hunt?

15. Panned by critics, doesn't stand a chance
On DarkHorizons, reporting that it got about a 37% favorable rating from LA/NY, and guess where most of the voters live? So, don't look for even a nomination, that's my guess. Plus, in the Post-Miramax-Weinstein era, any film released before Sept. has close to zero chance of winning, let alone get a nomination. Case in point, how did "Seabiscuit" do at the Oscars? Great film, a few token nods, but it won pretty much jack shit. And it was released over the summer.

No, "The Passion" will get nothing and from the reviews I've read, deserves to get nothing. I've yet to see the film, so I'll hold my critical notes, but I've read enough reviews and stats to suggest that this film will all but be forgotten by Dec. Not to mention that Icon Pictures (Mel's company) is a rather small house and a rouge producing agent. Not much support for those who work outside the boundries in Hollywood.

16. Usually, pictures released early in the year
are pretty much forgotten by the time Oscar time rolls around. Another thing, the Passion would be in the foreign language category, if anything.
