1. no..
Not at all.

I really hope the Oscars wouldn't sink that low to rob the most deserving people of their prize just to send a message.

2. on the other hand..
LOTR won everything it was nominated for...and it's about people going to fight the bad guys who will be coming to get them...arguably a pro-war movie...not a lot of negotiating going on...

3. Sauron & Saruman started the war of the ring
The humans, hobbits, elves, etc., were fighting a defensive war. The bad guys really were coming to get them. There were no lies about WMD.

11. When did Afghanistan invade us?
There were the events of 9/11, carried out (we think) by Saudis. The Taliban offered to turn over Osama if our government could prove his involvement. Didn't happen. Invasion of Afghanistan, lots of Afghanis killed, too many Americans (& allies) killed. Last I heard the Taliban is getting stronger & people are still dying.

Then, there's Iraq.

Tolkien approved of defensive war but, as a veteran of the trenches, he was not a warmonger.

7. But....
In the LOTR's movies it's the forces of GOOD that are outnumbered and undergunned.

The forces of EVIL under Sauron seek to dominate all of Middle-earth,
all they need is the One Ring. And it was Sauron(Bush) who would not negotiate, he used his surrogate, Saruman(Blair)to assist him in his War.

Sorry I could not help it. ;)

13. I know that.
There are aryan nation types who think Tolkien was one of them. Can't be responsible for the borderline illiterates, can we?

15. even leaving out any similarity to current events
LOTR is (per Tolkein) a rather Christian/Catholic view of the world...not the standard line in the entertainment world...

18. LOTR is NOT "Christian Fiction"
Just because Tolkien was a devout Catholic, that doesn't make his work a Christian piece. It denies the Creation. If you read the Appendices, he tells the history of how the universe was created. Furthermore, he never drops the tone of absolute matter-of-factness, always speaking on the pretense of having translated ancient historical texts. All indication from his writing is that he believed the story, even though we know from his biography that he was Catholic.

17. LOTR Pro-War????
Tolkien was very anit-war. He lost all of his adult friends on the Western Front. The Fellowship's attack on Sauron was NOT pre-emptive. Sauron had ivaded two countries. Not to mention the unbelievable attacks on Gondor's and other previous nations' sovereignty over the past score of thousands of years. In Biblical terms, Sauron was Baalsebul, Satan's second in command. Since the dawn of time, he had worked with Melkor (Satan) against the wishes and intentions of Iluvatar (God). While the Bush Junta may try to make similar claims against Sadam, the contrast between LOTR and the modern US atrocities could not be more stark.

4. Nah. It just means that talent and intelligence go hand in hand.
They were honored for their talent. Those types of performances require real intelligence and humanity.

And intelligent, humane people will be liberals. Without a doubt.

10. I think it's just coincedence
that both Robbins and Penn happen to be anti-war and also gave outstanding, oscar worthy performances. No one can deny that Penn's oscar was long overdue.

14. Not even close
I don't think 'Hollywood" cares about anything other than Hollywood. Just look at the 'lovesfest' last night. They're media whores just like faux news etc...... If I want politcal debate and rational thinking, I look for other places than Hollywood. Sean Penn deserved to win...no doubt....but what is his expertise?...other than playing a part and speaking someone else's words?
