Voices in the Wilderness receives summons from US goverment

why ?

delivered medical supplies to the Iraqi people.

Sounds dangerous, doesnt it ? medical supplies for sick people

------------------------------------

On July 29, 2003 the US government served Voices in the Wilderness with a summons. This summons calls on Voices to respond in 20 days to civil charges, stating that we have not paid $20,000 in fines plus interest and late fees, for having traveled to Iraq with medicines and toys since 1996. Consistent with our previous positions we do not intend to pay any fines. We do not believe that we have acted criminally by bringing desperately needed relief to the Iraqi people. As we develop our response to this most recent summons we see an unusual opportunity to further educate people about the criminality of US imposed economic sanctions, the recent "Shock and Awe Campaign," and US occupation. 1. The Government has been after them for a while now
Providing relief to the people your government is oppressing is against the law!

Reno was after them too for breaking Madeleine Albright's oh-so-inhumane sanctions and taking medicine to the Iraqi children. Makes you proud to be anumerkan, doesn't it?

2. yeah, this sucks,
and they're not the only ones. Several groups have had their members arrested after coming home from Iraq. Something to do with violating UN sanctions.

I believe the American Friends Service Committe fell afoul of TPTB a year or so ago, but they're not talking about it on the website. I'm going to ask around.

I have noticed that the AFSC has come under fire from some wingnut commentators. Ignoring the Nobel Peace Prize it got years ago for its work with the Marshall Plan at the request of Hoover, they're bringing back old claims that it was a hotbed of Communist cells back then.

McCarthyism never dies, it doesn't even fade away.

3. Where are the fines for Cheney's Halburton?

Halliburton Iraq ties more than Cheney said
...
Oil industry executives and confidential U.N. records showed, however, that Halliburton held stakes in two companies that signed contracts to sell more than $73 million in oil production equipment and spare parts to Iraq while Cheney was chairman and chief executive officer, the Post reported.

Two former senior executives of the Halliburton subsidiaries said they knew of no policy against dealing with Iraq. One of them said he was certain Cheney knew about the deals, though he had never spoken about them to the vice president directly.

4. So true
They'd have to arrest themselves.

"Now, this is our final warning! We know we're in there. If we don't come out with our hands up, we're coming in after us!
