Dear Mr. _____:
Thank you for your recent communication regarding the shameful record of the Bush administration in being forthright and honest about our involvement in Iraq and the Intelligence which led to us going to war. I did not vote for taking pre-emptive unilateral action to invade Iraq. I continue to be deeply troubled by the international repercussions of our actions, the loss of human life, the fiscal cost of our prolonged involvement, and the mismanagement of the occupation. They are all part of a larger, unsettling pattern, which includes irregularities in American contracts abroad and the "outing" of U.S. intelligence operatives.
For the past three years, long before we invaded Iraq, I have been outspoken not just on this administration's foreign policy, but also on their pattern of "bait-and-switch" on the environment, education, health care and destructive fiscal policies.
There are a number of recommendations people have for the best strategies to address these concerns. Currently I am joining several of my colleagues in pursuing a real Independent Commission to investigate intelligence reports of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq (H.R. 2625), cosponsoring H. Res. 499, to require the administration and the Defense Department to release documents relating to the disclosure of the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame, and sending a letter to Attorney General Ashcroft urging the establishment of an Independent Council to investigate foreign government contracts given to Halliburton.
I assure you I will continue to push for both accuracy and honesty from our government and in holding people accountable.
Sincerely,
Earl Blumenauer Member of Congress
