Army Discloses 20 Active Probes of Iraq Prisoner Cases; Bush Reaches Out to Arab World

WASHINGTON (AP) - The deaths of 10 prisoners and abuse of 10 more in Iraq and Afghanistan are under criminal investigation, the Army disclosed Tuesday as U.S. commanders in Baghdad announced interrogation changes and the White House reached out to the Arab world to try to blunt a widening and increasingly damaging controversy.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld condemned abuses of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers as "totally unacceptable and un-American."

President Bush's national security adviser said Bush "will speak directly to the Arab world," and a White House official said the president might do interviews with Arab television to underscore his feelings about photographs of naked prisoners and gloating U.S. soldiers.

"We all feel outraged at these pictures," National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice told the Arab television station Al-Arabiya. She said Bush was "determined to find out if there is any wider problem than just what happened at Abu Ghraib. And so he has told Secretary Rumsfeld that he expects an investigation, a full accounting."

12. Good suggestion, belle. Besides, the entire world is owed an apology.
For what it's worth, I'm sorry, World. But I really didn't have anything to do with it, as I simply voted with the majority of my countrymen...

19. True, but...
...the people who have been victimized *are* Arabs; Arabs are by far the majority population in the Middle east; and non-Arabs, such as Iranians, view themselves as very distinct from Arabs. So it's really is not terribly inaccurate to refer to the "Arab world". It betrays a Western bias, of course, but that's all.

20. And why should only Arabs be upset?. . .
I'm a Californian. My heritage is Irish. I'm deeply offended by it all, and wouldn't be any more or less upset no matter what the race or beliefs of the victims. Hell, I wouldn't treat a white Republican like this.

18. mopaul,
Haven't you heard, this wasn't torture, it was abuse, jeez.

That's the spin from WH and Rumsfeld, heard it all day and I am disgusted. Scares the hell out of me to know their definition of torture.

God help us!

8. Bush* never makes mistakes...you think he'll apologize?
Have you forgotten last month's press conference already?

This man is a psychopath.

He'll condemn the actions of others but, as usual, take no responsibility as commander-in-chief.

9. Well, isn't that nice?
He can make apologies to the Arabs, but he can't apologize to the 911 Families? Remember in that press conference he called a while back when the reporter asked him if he would be prepared to make an apology? He skirted the issue and made the point that terrorists attacked us and that he owes no one an apology. He's a real character, huh?

(p.s. When I say character, I mean something else but it's too foul to post.)

13. Here's what the old boy should say:
"Dear citizens of the Middle East: I deeply regret all the things we have done to undermine the stability of your countries, while we proceeded to make every mistake imaginable while in the process bankrupting our country, just for the sake of securing Iraqi oil.

"I am also sorry for being aware of this problem over a year ago. You see, I'm not a proactive president. I always react after things blow up and try to minimize the damage."

That's because I'm really incompetent and let myself get talked into these stupidities which have eroded world stability.

Sorry.

15. He'll never apologize.
Remember what Poppy said, after the Vincennes shot down the Iranian airline, killing 290 people? "I'll never apologize for the United States. I don't care what the facts are."

He'll express "shock" and "regret."

He'll use weasely words, meaning nothing.

terrorists. And he will offend either the Iraqi people or all Muslims.

he could apologise for KILLING ALL THOSE PEOPLE and BOTH WARS--

Freaking animals. Rumsfeld - Cheney - Bush - Rice, etc..

Gee, now when they ask him at future Press Conferences if he's done anything wrong he'll be able to answer..

"Well.. I apologised once.. if that's what you mean.."

21. his "apology" if it comes will be bullshit
and everyone in the rest of the world knows it.

The rest of the world knows that Bush lied to them, blew them off, told them to fuck themselves.

The rest of the world knows that the torture pictures were an accurate representation of the Bush regime's attitudes not just toward Iraqis but towards foreigners in general.

Bush is well fucked by this slip... Oops, the veil was torn off of the facade, and no one can deny what the true essence of Bush policies is now.

Edited on Tue May-04-04 07:34 PM by Rebellious Republica
National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice told the Arab television.
Of coarse they feel outrage, they have been caught with there pants down, so to speak. They only outrage is that they feel is that they were caught!
If no one is around to hear it, does a tree make a noise when it falls in the forest?
