Will Hispanics rally around Bustamante in Ca?
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 08:58 PM by Cascadian
It would seem to me that Cruz Bustamante can overtake Arnold through the Hispanic and minority vote. Being Latino himself and has a greater understanding of the issues they face, Bustamante I would think would have the edge. I am not in Ca. but that's just my observation.

Anybody have their take?

John

1. Not if the CDP remains rudderless
Until then, I'm pushing for Thong Girl, Georgy Russell (who gets a top spot on the ballot by virtue of the letter her last name begins with).

3. First they have to find out who he is
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 09:01 PM by Democat
My informal unscientific early research says that most Hispanics, and other citizens of California, don't have any idea who Cruz Bustamante is or why they should vote for him.

They do, however, like other Califonians, know who Arnold is, and like his movies.

If the vote was held today, my guess is that Arnold would get more of the Hispanic vote than Cruz.

The important thing is that the vote is not being held today. Democrats have two months to educate voters, both Hispanic and everyone else, on who Bustamante is and what he can offer the state.

I still think that Cruz could win if everything went his way. Unfortunately, with the media promoting Around nonstop, and the Democratic Party in California seemingly caught off guard by this whole mess, it doesn't look too promising right now.

Cruz can win if he has a solid plan, if he doesn't sleep for the next two months, and if the Democratic Party is organized and smart at getting the vote out, but it won't be easy.

5. He will definately have to reach out to Hispanics.
They can be a powerful voting bloc in California. Many of them are Democratic leaning in California as well. He needs to be address their issues and concerns. That could benefit his run. I don't even think Arnold knows Spanish but for maybe a few words.

4. I don't know. I am Hispanic, Latina, a person of Spanish heritage,
whatever. I don't know what to call myself anymore. I have never voted for anyone just because they are Hispanic or have a Spanish surname. They have to have something behind it as well. My assemblyman is Hispanic and I voted against him because he is a Republican. I will be voting for Bustamante as insurance, after voting no on the recall for Davis, but it won't be because his name is Bustamante.

I think it's kind of insulting to say that a certain community will vote for that person because he is one of them. Certainly, I'd like to think we are more critical than that.

6. I think he is quite popular in some areas
my district today had a poll on tv that shows Bustamante ahead of the annointed one. This is the 50% latino Coachella Valley. his bas is the Latinos in Cen Val

9. I hope the whole Dem party rallies behind him
I hope all Dems rally behind Bustamante. It looks like Davis is dead in the water, so we really need to win the vote straight up. Right now, I'm pretty worried about it.

10. davis should resign
... to help Bustamante. as long as Davis is there in office, Bustamante is in a bind. Bustamante can't exactly campaign on a platform of "cleaning up sacramento" without it seeming to be an attack on Davis. effectively Bustamante has to fight with one hand tied behind his back.

that puts him at a disadvantage wrt the repubs.

Davis should resign for the good of the party.

11. Davis and Cruz are linked
They work together running the state. If Davis resigns, it may hurt Cruz in the eyes of voters.

It would also allow Arnold and his thugs to focus on Cruz instead of having two targets to keep their eyes on.

The issue will be moot if the media keeps up their shameless promotion of Arnold the way they have been doing since he announced.

Jesus Christ himself couldn't beat someone who the media has choosen to win.

12. One more time . . .
It's too late for Davis to resign. He needed to do that before the petitition was filed. If Davis resigned today, Bustamonte would take over as Governor UNTIL the recall.

13. 26% Undecided
I saw a poll on NBC that showed 26% do not know who they would vote for GOV. Let's hope this goes to Cruz. That and the numbers for Arnold should start to drop once the media frenzy cools down a bit.

14. Traditionally . . .
the problem has been that Latinos have a very low voter turnout in California. I know that the California Latino/Chicano Caucus is going all out with voter registration and handing voter information -- in English and in Spanish -- about the recall. In that we have less than 8 weeks, it's anybody's guess whether that effort will produce enough votes.

Another problem is that Cruz is from the San Joaquin Valley -- an area that is held with contempt by many Bay Area and Southern California residents. Consequently, they haven't bothered to educate themselves about him even though he's the LT. GOVERNOR.

The same people were caught off-guard by George Deukmajian, a Republican from the San Joaquin Valley who served as Governor for 8 years and continued Reagan's jihad on public education, the environment and several other issues supposedly near and dear to Democrat hearts.
