15. It should be since the author is one of those "suicides".
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 03:49 PM by alaine
Jim Hatfield supposedly "committed suicide" right around the time the book was supposed to be released. Apparently the publisher was sued because of the revelations of W's cocaine abuse and from what I read they agreed not to release the book and to BURN any left-over copies. Sorry I don't have a link on this if you google on Jim Hatfield it will come up.

There is also a fund for his daughter, Haley Hatfield. Maybe the royalties from this book will help support her since the BFEE probably murdered her Dad.

edit:
I did not know about the Franken suit, will someone PLEASE POST A LINK!

23. The original publisher
received threats from * campaign lawyers**, and saw their author discredited in public in October 1999. They withdrew 88,000 copies from stores and promised to "burn" them.

In fact, St. Martins din't burn the book, as they had vowed to do. The publisher remaindered many of the unsold copies of Unfortunate Son, to recoop a few extra bucks. Hatfield and Soft Skull received reports that cases of them appeared in a chain of bookstores throughout Texas.

**Under the instructions of Poppy.

18. This reminds me of the Dixie Chicks tour
The first day their tickets went on sale they set a new record for first day ticket sales, out-selling every other act, including folks like the Stones, Madonna, Elvis, U2, etc.

It's apparent that liberals vote with their wallets more than their mouths sometimes.

p.s. anyone who goes to Amazon.com, check out their snippet on Greg Palast's book, what a load of shit, "political muck-raking has a long history and Palast is evidently proud to be part of it"
????????????????????????????????????????????????
What the hell is that about, "The Best Democracy..." is a fantastic book, maybe they'll check the sales of Franken's book and tone down the right-wing rhetoric a bit.

20. i feel so good
looking at Liberal (e.g. thoughtful and consistent and nonhypocritical) bestsellers. It's great to be looking at the review to a book like Liars and to see Moore's Stupid come up as a recommendation. The stress begins to melt away and for a moment its like we're not living in a Twilight zone.

in ways that make you wonder why you never thought it was that simple before. I love the guy from way back when.
Note that when his book hits #1 and stays there, it won't have a dagger next to it indicating bulk purchases.

26. He deserves this success
Franken has carried the heat to the Republicans for years, even when he was pretty much the sole voice of coherent opposition to the current Administration. I hope he's lighting Cuban cigars with $20 bills by this time next year. He has served his country well.

.... from everything I know about law regarding satire, I'm not worried," Franken, who has not filed a response in court, said in a statement released Tuesday. He is vacationing in Italy. ....

"As far as the personal attacks go," Franken responded, "when I read `intoxicated or deranged' and `shrill and unstable' in their complaint, I thought for a moment I was a Fox commentator.

"And by the way, a few months ago, I trademarked the word `funny.' So when Fox calls me `unfunny,' they're violating my trademark. I am seriously considering a countersuit."

33. Here is Al's statement-

http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,12311,00.html?eol.tkr

Fox News declined to comment on the trademark infringement suit, citing pending litigation. Franken was out of the country traveling, but released a brief statement through his publicist.

"I normally prefer not to be out of the country on vacation when I'm sued. However, from everything I know about law regarding satire, I'm not worried. But I'd like to thank Fox for all the publicity," said Franken.

"As far as the personal attacks go, when I read 'intoxicated or deranged' and 'shrill and unstable' in their complaint, I thought for a moment I was a Fox commentator. And by the way, a few months ago, I trademarked the word 'funny.' So when Fox calls me 'unfunny,' they're violating my trademark. I am seriously considering a countersuit."
