Homelessness in major cities escalating as more laid-off workers
Homelessness in major cities is escalating as more laid-off workers already living paycheck -to-paycheck wind up on the streets or in shelters.

1. Been there...still doing that
and I'm not the only one...I've noticed an increase in the number of people sleeping in the parks and subways here in NYC...there could be major problems ahead...

4. My office sits smack-dab between two homeless shelters
actually two branches of the same agency: the women's and family shelter out back, and the single men's shelter in the front.

Of course I got here after the Selection, but even in the two years I have been here, the population has definitely burgeoned -- especially out back (women and families) :( It's a jarring trip into Bush*'s Amerikkka to go that way to the fast-food joints down the block -- and to have to come back to the office, right past little kids playing in their moms' beat-up old cars, while carrying a bag of food.

Addition of a Repukkke gov last year can't have helped any. Hawai'i is said to be many things, but "Dickensian" wasn't supposed to have been one of them :grr: Then again, we're down to the 19th meanest city to the homeless this year, coming off a Top Ten finish in 2002 </mild sarcasm>

6. Here the jobless are just leaving town.
Putting everything they can into the back of their old pickup, the kids scrunched in front, and heading out...maybe to your town.
