Political asylum in Canada....
Not for draft dodging (both of us are outside of draftable age, even under *'s new proposals), but due to anticipated anti-gay discrimination.

Anyone think it would fly? If so, what do you think the odds would be that we could pull it off?

Background:

When Asscroft used the magic words "terrorists want to influence the Presidential Election," I turned to my boyfriend and told him he is to be ready to leave on 12 hours notice. If * announces the delay, suspension, or cancellation of the election, we're making a break for the border.

We're seven hours from the border, so our departure at this point could take as much as 19 hours. If there are further signs pointing to Bush hijacking the government to prevent him losing (such as moving the terror alert to orange for no good reason, or more piehole alerts on how the terrorists want to influence the election), we'll start taking steps to lower our departure time.

I've gotten him used to the idea of suddenly moving to Ontario if need be, although we both (especially me, as a politician) hope it doesn't come to that. But if * decides to go all Handmaid's Tale on us, what can we do?

1. I've mentioned the same thing to my husband.
My husband works for a German company and he's over North American operations...so, I'm thinking if things get too bad, we'll move NA headquarters to Toronto!!

2. You have to leave early --

When JFK was assassinated the governnment closed all the borders and did not permit anyone to leave the country. I know--I tried.

3. I wonder if they would arrest anybody for escaping to Canada?
If it ever got to that point? I mean it would be possible but risky to simply cross the border through mountain or forests. Of course you could do it in the dead of night. The only trouble is that I fear that this country could encourage some "Anschluss" between US and Canada.

4. i doubt it
I believe they don't want us (non-Bushies) here. So I don't think they'll have a problem with it.

5. if you're not draft dodging
I think it would be easy enough to just become citizens. I'd be looking into what paperwork it takes to get the equivliant of a green card and then go from there. I know several canadian and american nationals who have dual citizenship. One was just due to living there and going to school for long enough.

6. We vote by mail
& I've already scheduled my vacation for Calgary. You'll have to be there early, or on foot in the dark, otherwise no dice. It may also be helpfull to be Blackfoot.

Watch for telltale military buildup at the border beforehand.

7. I recall Chalmers Johnson on CSPAN ...
... a couple of months ago. Chalmers said, and it chilled me, "Plan your outs now. Buy that condo in Vancouver. Do what you have to." The idea being when the militarist s*it hits the fan, no out will be possible.

This was followed by a Noam Chomsky appearance around the same time where Noam outlined his thesis for the dangers of a Space Pearl Harbor and its possible ensuing catastrophies for humankind.

I tell ya', that old Confuscian curse, "May you live in interesting times!" Alas, we do.

8. As a lesbian in a binational relationship...
Trust me: I've explored all possibilities, and the odds are NOT in our favor.

I doubt any old-timers want to hear our story all over again. If you do, pabsungenis, send me a PM.
