Did Nancy Reagan refuse to take Bush II's call?
And did Bush offer to be a pallbearer? My wife said at dinner this evening that during the press conference this afternoon, the lady there named the different people that had called expressing condolences including Ted Kennedy. According to my wife, the spokes-lady said that Nancy was unavailable to take Bush's call and that he called back a second time and that she took his call then. Knowing the acrimony between the Bush and Reagan families, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Nancy at first refused to take his call. I think it was a backhanded slap at Bush for them to publicly say that while Nancy took calls from people like Ted Kennedy and Colin Powell, she was inexplilcably unavailable to take the call from "the president".

The spokeslady said that Bush offered to... then stopped in mid-sentence and said that if there was anything Nancy needed, blah, blah, blah. Immediately after talking about who called, the spokeslady started naming pallbearers. She only named 5 and seemed to hesitate a bit seeming to feel awkward at only naming 5. Of course traditionally there are 6 pallbearers.

I watched the press conference this afternoon and I wasn't paying that close attention, but I'm wondering if Bushco, Rove et al are presurring Nancy through, no doubt, indirect channels to make Bush a pallbearer. Indirect channels because Nancy would tell the whole bunch where to stick it if they were so crass as to come out and ask directly. But it would be (at least to the RW) extreme political symbolism for Bush to be one of Raygunz pallbearers.

This apparently something to watch while it develops.

3. Sounds plausible...
I mean, she of all people would know how to tweak Georgie (and what would get reported in the press).

Who were the 5 pallbearers named? Anybody in the public eye?

and the Worthless Little Shit thinks he can help tote a coffin? You know he'll trip over his own feet and drop it.

Then, as the lid creaked open, the Thing inside would slowly sit up...

8. Bush as a pallbearer. You've got to be kidding! He fell off his bike!
Plus he's dropped the ball on everything else, I doubt Nancy Reagan would trust him to balance a coffin....

18. This could be a source of serious division in the GOP
The Reagans have never liked the Bushes all that much, that's no secret. If Bush II decides to start capitalizing on Ronnie's death - it will be political suicide. So I hope he tries.

20. No way...
...the Secret Service lets him do that. It makes him a great target (ponderous and upright). Plus, were something to happen, it would make things that much more awkward to quickly get Shrub "under cover," including possibly tackling the coffin and other pallbearers, sending the casket crashing.

Has a sitting President ever been a pallbearer?

Plus, I don't think Dubya would see it as "dignified" enough for his arrogant self...unless of course Dick and Karl told him he had no choice.

22. Here's my guess: they offered it to poppy and he said
why don't you let little chimpie do it? i think it would be more appropriate for the preznit blah blah blah. Nancy Demured. Negociations are ongoing, which is why the vacant spot.

You bet you're sweet ass Rove would love America to watch Chimp lugging Reagan down the path on the Ranch. And if he gets his way the Dems ought to have every bit of info about the bad blood between Nancy and Chimp and then scream "political funeral" high heaven.

26. Because Reagan never had respect for Poppy
He thought he was a wimp. Never gave him much to do as VP.

Believe it or not, he never invited the Bush's to the second story residence of the White House, even after Bush won election in 88.

Of course there are many on DU who post that Bush was the Oz behind Reagan and pulled his strings which is a laugh.
