U.S. Clamps Secrecy on Warnings Before 9/11

It's not just the Saudi secret that's being kept.

The recent report of the joint congressional committee that probed intelligence failures before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon reveals what the Bush administration doesn't want Americans to know about the American government.

You would not know this from media accounts about this report. They have dwelled on what the Bush administration doesn't want us to know about the Saudi government.

This is the famous 28-page chapter, a series of blank lines across page after page, that the president refuses to declassify despite the pleadings of the bipartisan group of lawmakers and the Saudi government itself.

The dustup over Saudi secrets is exquisitely convenient. It obscures George W. Bush's relentless hold on U.S. secrets and on information he maintains should be secret, though it has not necessarily been before now.

1. i read a story with an FBI official
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 10:26 PM by indictrichardperle
who said that the Saudi hype was a bunch of Bull.

Its obvious Perle, Wolfowitz and the neo-con cabal want any excuse to demonize the Saudis. It was pretty telling when Saudi demanded the 28 pages be made public.

Remember the RAND turd who spoke before Perle's defense policy board, calling Saudi the "kernal of evil" ? Dore Gold..an Israeli official has a similar book out about how "evil" saudi arabia is.

5. Yeah, and they are predicting that gas is going to go up
sharply at the end of the summer. The Saudi's could get pissed and screw us big time with gas prices if they wanted to.

Of course it may have been planned this way, Bush calls up his good friends, says I need a favor, "I'm gonna redact these pages and I want you to take a fall for it", and the Saudi's say "what's in it for us" and Bush says "if you play the game it'll look like you have a reason to raise the price of gas and you can make a killin" and the Saudis say "what do we have to do" and Bush says,"just wait til about a week after the report comes out and throw a little public hissy fit for me" and they say "sure thing, dude" and everybody wins.

7. yea and your guess is just that a guess
i dont see how the Saudis are guilty of anything really. Their government isnt responsible for 15 extremists, as the official story goes. Just as any crack-pot a-hole from the US, doesnt represent America.

The narco guerrillas in south america? does that mean they represent their governments and we should invade south america ?

Im pretty skeptical of the defense policy board making rants about how "we have to seize the Saudi oilfields".

21. Didn't the energy execs also grant permission
For the release of the Cheney energy meeting attendees? I seem to recall that it was basically just the Administration that was insisting on the secrecy.

8. Our dems have seen it
If it is hot enought they will leak it when the time is right. If it isn't that hot then they will let it be. Don't worry IF thoes 28 pages have something to do with BushCo it will come out.

14. There is nothing in that report that is that damaging to Schleprock.
It is unlikely that they would let anything damaging in, but if they did, there is really no way they would give it to the Democrats and then let the Democrats decide when to leak it. They know the Democrats would wait until the Republicans are ready to take control of the news cycle. If there was anything damaging in the report, they would have released it right away, but staged something else to take the news cycle.

once the iraqi oil comes on line...the saud royal family will be toppled (albiet live a luxurious life in monaco) ..fundamentalists will be seen to be behind the coup..when in fact it will the CIA and MI6..OBL will ressurect as the worlds most dangerous man again..( more lives than a cat this guy)..US and Brit forces will intervene to ensure the safety of the Saudi people (god bless GW and poodle) and a interim admin (maybe schwarzkopf) installed..stability in the region maintained and oil flows ..all part of the PNAC plan..and it only costs working class lives (grunts) and the political classes control oil and wealth and all the media..

13. So has the question of disclosure been asked of the Dem candidates?
What is their position.

We were so stupid to believe that this is a government of the people, for the people, by the people. We pay - we own.

We elect representatives to do OUR bidding.

The President presides over the various brances of government which are ours.

It's our information. Plain and simple.

Republicans of the right wing cabal are out to own the world, plan by plan.

18. That has been my opinion from the very moment
the Saudis asked for those contents to be made public.

The Saudis are, as always, the convenient scapegoat, but are becoming weary
of playing that role, because they don't see the US keeping their
part of the bargain anymore (zealing for Saudi geopolitical interests)
all the while their regime is facing the comming crisis of succession.

20. It was already reported in Time last December
that there were things very embarrassing to the Bush admnistration and Bush himself in the report; and thus, they were back then predicting that it would take a long time and real push to get any of this report out. They gave an example of some CIA or FBI (??) guy who said orginially that he spoke directly to Bush regarding reports of terrorists going to fly planes into buildings, etc. Time said later he was forced by the administration to change his formal statement into "he talked to administration officials" (and leave out the reference to Bush. I don't believe this came out in the released part of the report, so it must be part of either the blocked out passages or even a total revised version. How do we know that this version (even with it's blocked out info) hasn't been cleaned up real good by the White House before being released. They have had it for half a year and Time said it was being gone over by "White House LAWYERS"----seems to me that 'lawyers' are to protect the scum; not to determine what is classified material.
