Ark. Gov. Huckabee has cellphone "talk" with God at Rep. meet (no joke)
Boston Globe:

JOAN VENNOCHI
Playing politics with God
By Joan Vennochi, 2/26/2004

MEL GIBSON is using the son of God to make movie millions. So it probably shouldn't surprise anyone if a Republican governor uses a mock conversation with God the father to promote a presidential campaign.

That's what Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee did the other night in Washington. Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, took the stage before President Bush delivered a pretty good speech to Republican governors who gathered for a fund-raiser. When Huckabee's cellphone rang, he pulled it out and pretended to have an extended conversation with God....

***

During the "conversation," Huckabee said that while he knew the Lord couldn't take sides in a partisan way and support Bush, "We're behind him, yes, sir, we sure are." He also made a reference to taking care of "family" and "marriage" for God.

The next day, Bush backed an amendment to the Constitution that would ban gay marriage, a move that is generally viewed as an effort to satisfy the conservative base of the GOP, including the religious right....

15. He stole the gig from Ellen Degeneres
Several years back part of her stage act was a telephone conversation with God ... this guy isn't even original and he stole it from a member of the class of citizens he harms.

What nerve!

2. I wonder if God is going to call Pigboy on his cell about protecting
marriage and family. There are a few other Rethuglicans God might ring up on their cells as well, and even have a discussion with the late RayGun (if RR is present for such a speech).

Shit, it didn't even take one day after Bill Clinton spoke about politics moving away from good vs evil back to right vs wrong, and Huckabee pulls tis crap.

3. Have to dismiss the entire article because of this...
...took the stage before President Bush delivered a pretty good speech to Republican governors...

Can't be true...I don't believe he ever gave a "pretty good speech."

I'm so proud of our governor. Always looking out for the little man (since he's dropped 90+ pounds, the little man is him). He's a disgusting piece of trash.

He was another beneficiary of Ken Starr's witch hunts. Starr took out after every politician in Arkansas and found that then current Gov Tucker had taken out a loan back in the 80's and claimed it was for one purpose but used it for another. The loan was repaid in full and on time, but it's illegal to claim one purpose on a loan app and use it for something else. So, Tucker had to go. It was one of the few prosecutions Starr actually got a conviction on.

The irony of the whole thing is that Tucker and Clinton were bitter enemies. Ran against each other several times. After getting his clock cleaned by Clinton, Tucker slunk off and made a few million bucks (when the loan app was made) and then ran for lt gov in 90.

edit: fixed date

11. Native Arkansan here -- you make an interesting point about Starr...
and Arkansas. I always liked Jim Guy Tucker, but wasn't there to follow his case. It sounds like you think he got a raw deal?

Drunk with Power.

As slavishly devoted to Der Fuhrer* as their spritiual antecdentes and Prescott Bush's Business Partners were (different Fuhrer's, though)

You know, I'd be hard-pressed to make up half the shit that is going on since the Old American Republic died in Dec 2000.

If I travelled back in time and told the people there, they would laugh in their blissful and relatively prosperous ignorance.

No one would believe me.
