Official's Comment on People Using Food Banks Prompt Call for Resignation

By Malia Rulon Associated Press Writer
Published: Jun 23, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - A senior Agriculture Department official's comment that people who eat at food banks are "taking the easy way out" was taken out of context, an agency spokeswoman said Wednesday, after several members of Congress called for his resignation.

Eric Bost, the department's undersecretary for food and nutrition programs, was quoted in a June 6 story in The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch about the growing use of food banks as saying he was skeptical of claims that food needs among the poor were increasing.

"There's a bump, but how much of that is due to people taking the easy way out? I don't know," he said.

2. That idiot has obviously never been to a food bank
Right. Living on bags of cornmeal, northern white beans and stale bakery is taking the easy way out.

What an asshole.

4. And, of course, the old repuke response...
His comments were "taken out of context."

I want to send all repukes back to their home planet, Oh Right Sure!

I found this pic while perusing a link on another DU thread. It made me feel a lot better!

Canned chicken :puke: , old turkeys given out at Xmas and Thanksgiving :puke: , old expired food given out at many also ... the list goes on and on.

I had to do this for awhile several years ago. I swore, if I was ever in a position to get away from the food banks, I would. I am now free of this.

They acted like they were really "giving". In fact, many grocery stores give their expired food to them to give out so they won't have to pay to have it hauled away and dumped!

Absolutely disgusting. I cannot think of one single reason why a person would opt to go to a food bank. Besides the reasons I mention, they do not give you very much food (maybe enough for a few days at best).

You can bet your last cent that this asshole doesn't have a clue! :grr:

8. You got canned chicken?
You were LUCKY!

One time, they handed me a slab of salt pork. What the hell do you do with a hard slab of salt pork? (I cooked it with beans, since that's all I had...it was horrible!).

13. yeah canned chicken ...
and I mean a whole damn chicken in a can. I opened it up (was told to make a nice stew out of it) and whew did it ever stink! So, I decided it would make nice cat food for my then 6 cats at that time and guess what? These 6 stray cats wouldn't even eat it! Now what the hell does that tell you? :puke: :puke: :puke:

Needless to say, I was really glad when the day came that I never had to go back again.

:dem: :kick:

Is what I did with mine. I hate when they give things that require eggs, milk, or butter and you don't have any. Try Macaroni and cheese with only water to mix with it.

Fucking assholes need to wait in line three hours for stale corn corn flakes and powdered milk. That's what they gave us not too long ago.

and make sandwiches with it.

The canned black eye peas were't so bad. It's a good thing we eat everything with rice at my house.

3. The nerve
That idiot needs to get out of his office and go talk to these people. Most of them don't even bother trying to get help there until there is *no other way*. He obviously doesn't have the first clue about the use of food banks or he'd know that Americans have something called PRIDE that keeps many who qualify for food stamps and the like from even TRYING to get what they are entitled to.

The lack of empathy for people in need shown by the Bush Gang is beyond disgusting.

6. Does this guy actually think people CHOOSE to go to a food bank? Seems
that someone with that attitude should not be in charge of food and nutrition programs.

11. Eric Bost needs to "Spend more time with his Family"...
In other words, Take one for the team, pull your foot out of your filthy ReTHUG mouth and RESIGN, you piece of catshit!

"Easy way out"? As opposed to what, risking arrest for shoplifting food?

Piece of shit, perpetuating the Reagan legacy of "There are no 'disadvantaged', only 'Lazy People' in the ranks of the Poor"

I got so sick of those fuckers looking down their noses at me back in the 80's... "Why, I don't know why you're having so much trouble, I'm doing GREAT" and "I'd give you enough of a raise to actually do some good, but I'd hate to see you lose your food stamps"

OK, folks, time to get those Emails going to the Congresscritters....

I was limping badly and was blind in one eye and had a patch over it for fucks sake! As if I wanted this? And they offer you this crap food to eat when you are very ill? :wtf:

Working 40-plus hours a week for minimum pay ($3.35 back then) trying to raise a kid and keep my wife at home to raise her like the Conservatives said I needed to...

I thought I got all this anger out of my system last week, but I HATED Reagan, and I wish John Hinkley had spent more time at the range and less time in the bathroom with Jodi's picture.

Hey, Agent Mike, it's not illegal to wish the Dead dead, is it?

They get to donate out-of-date, mispackaged, and otherwise nonsellable "food" and take a tax write-off for their "donation."

18. Please -- take 5 minutes, call 800-839-5276!
Ask for 5 congresscritters of your choice, and demand the resignation of Eric Bost!

That's all the time it takes, and it has an effect.

You can be sure the freepers are calling and praising the guy, so we need to make sure his resignation comes to pass.

I thank you!

Kanary
