I was listening to WWJ in Detroit on the way back from lunch. Middle of the road to right slanted station (they DO play James Dobson in the morning).
Heard these items:
The Ambassador Bridge (a 3/4 mile suspension bridge, companion to the Detroit Tunnel) links Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. It allows the transport of over 3 MILLION trucks per year, and with the twin Blue Water Bridges at Port Huron, it is the only method of getting a truck from the Canadian Auto Facilities and the US Auto facilities unless you go to Niagra Falls or Minnesota.
They are going to build a new bridge for the increased traffic and slowed traffic due to thingies like "Orange Alerts" (the current passage at Detroit takes over 3 hours at this exact time: 1220 on Thursday, Aug 5th. You can SWIM the river in less than an hour). The new bridge will cost $300 Million, a fairly good price for a bridge.
Now the punchline:
Bush just signed ANOTHER $400 BILLION dollar defense bill which includes another $25 BILLION for Iraq operations (aren't they a "Sovereign Nation" again? Oh well..). At the SMALL figure, you could build EIGHTY (80) NEW 3/4 mile bridges. At the BIG figure, you could build OVER ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY (1330) BRIDGES.
Maybe it's time to JUST STOP being the "tough guy" on the block..?
