David Hackworth slams new swift boat ads.
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 05:18 PM by demdem
These people seem to bite off more than they can chew.

Hackworth
"Kerry's Purple Heart wouldn't be considered problematic if he weren't a presidential candidate. The grousers, to a man, seem to be simply passing on secondhand bilge that they ought to stow in their sea bags and lay off."

3. I assume everybody heard Tom Oliphant on Franken today
talking about how bad this "Swift Boat" crap will backfire on Bush/Cheney. Bush/Cheney hasn't seen the beginning of the backlash shitstorm on this slander of a Vietnam Veteran.

7. Well, he wasn't too nice about Kerry's DNC speech
but he writes for the Boston Globe and is familiary with this slander being aimed at Kerry, as well as with Kerry's massive capacity to defend the truth on these counts.

9. Didn't backfire when they did it to McCain.
What makes anyone think it will backfire now?

12. Well, I'm not Tom Oliphant
But Tom Oliphant would answer that it has backfired any time anybody has tried this shit against Kerry.

13. Quite simple, actually.
McCain is of the same party as Bush. when Rove ran this game on McCain, it was McCain's choice to fight it (and probably lose all standing in his party as well as possibly harming his constituents, knowing the vindictive nature of Bush and his clique) or suck it down and play along. He chose to shut up and save his place in the party.

Kerry is not bound by those constraints. He's not in Bush's party, he owes Bush nothing, he doesn't like Bush or want to be liked by Bush.

So somewhere along the line, he will shove this issue right up Bush's ass. And his friend John McCain will be laughing up his sleeve when it happens.

17. It appears to be backfiring
A number of Republicans on other boards I frequent were distancing themselves from the ad and this group this morning, after having brought them up as reliable sources before. I predicted it would backfire. I'm glad they made the ad. It brought this slime out in the open for all to see, and every reasonable person who saw it was horrified.

Bushco has already had to backtrack. This morning they declined to say anything negative about the ad. Tonight McClellan is "distancing" the WH from it.

I hope the ads keep playing and the WH has to backtrack all the way to awarding Kerry a Medal of Honor to make up for the smear! LOL!

4. Eew. The Swift Assed Veterans.
will go down in infamy as the lowest, slimiest... BTW, Kitty Pilgrim on Lou Dobbs just said the ads were so (?) that the Bush campaign wants no part of it. Don't think that's true. The White House REFUSES to denounce the ads but does want Kerry to denounce all 527 ads. They think they are so clever. Too clever by half that is. Bye bye a-holes.

10. Hackworth pissed me off on occassion in the Clinton years
but has pleased me greatly in the Bush* error. Guess I should've read his stuff more critically in the 90's - he probably had more points I should've listened to.

I had just checked his Defending America column at SFTT to see if he had made any comment about these ads. Nothing there but I'm sure they would not be well received there anyway.

20. Go Hack! It's true. If we weren't in a
"War on Terra", having been attacked et al...NONE of this would be an issue.

No one would give a tinkers damn about his war record, or not to this degree at least.

I believe Kerry only brings it up to quell the fears of those in America who feel freaked out that we still need "strong leadership" to face the so-called enemy lurking ... 'out there...' Elsewise, Kerry would be running on the economy and such.
