2. Whoa!
How tragic for those People down down there in Punta Gorda.

I don't know but it seems like they will get help because of there being an election and bush I brushing hurricane Andrew victims aside and him losing Florida.

As Lily Tomlin says..It's impossible to be too cynical.

I wonder if any of those structures were hurricane proof?

3. Why the heck do they allow trailer courts right on the water?
I just saw the overhead films on CNN. But I suppose it's a ridiculous question. They build homes on the sides of mountains here. We even saw a house built up against the side of a hill in the mountains and the mtn shale was chipping off and had broken windows. But trailers at the shore's edge in Florida? It's wacky.

in the path of Charley in the Punta Gorda area alone! one had 1200 units... they haven't begun to search all the debris for victims

11. That's the way things are in the Southeast
The concept of "zoning" has an entirely different meaning there than in most other places.

My ex used to live in South Carolina. It wasn't unusual there to see sturdy century-old homes built on stilts, homes that have actually survived multiple hurricanes, next to mobile home parks. Or a fireworks store right next to a gas station.

5. The picture of the man with the gun..
is why you want the NG on duty.

Sad to say, but I'll bet there'll be a few instances of neighbors shooting neighbors by mistake.

7. There were no such incidents in the aftermath of Andrew AFAIK
See the April 1993 National Geographic for an interesting writeup with lots of fine photos. On pages 12-13 there's an image of a man using a rusty old revolver to confront a looter.

After Andrew looting was a very big problem. People getting shot by mistake was not. The overall situation was much worse.

There's not enough National Guard to be everywhere they are needed every time. Sometimes people have to take care of themselves.

9. So how do we get the media to report
the lack of assistance to these people and the lack of national guard units to help maintain order and assist in the search missions?

10. Damned if I know
Even the BBC is taking the standard "Bush does blah blah blah..." line.
