Why don't we elect Democrats?
Common Wisdom says that the most liberal states, the staunch blue ones, are NY and CA, and MN used to be one, too. Yet all three have Republican governors.

Common wisdom says that NY is one of the most liberal city, a true blue one, again. Yet it elected Guliani and now Blomberg.

What is wrong with us? Can we not find adequate candidates? Do Democratic candidates just chew on the same old tired phrases instead of offering fresh ideas?

Yes, I know that Schwarzenegger was elected because of his "star power," yet Davis was really sooo.. gray, that had the Republicans not followed their own tradition of slaying their own during the primaries, a moderate Riordan would have won back in 2002.

1. Probably for the same reason
that Kansas, Oklahoma and Wyoming have Democratic governors.

Oh yeah, and the Dakotas (North and South). Of the six federal offices, ALL are Democrats.

Go figure.

2. and Vermont is like that too
but Michael Bloomberg is a RINO. He's only Republican because the Dem primary was crowded.

yeah, Dems don't win as many electiosn as they should because the party is disorganized and not united. Bunch of wankers won't even support each other.

And the Republicans control everything: corporations, all branches of government, all three cable news networks, and your fucking soul! And they seem to have money out the ying yang. And on top of that, they seem to win on fear: fear of terrorists, fear of Democrats, fear of gays, etc.

3. CA isn't as liberal as most people think.
This is the state that elected Ronald Reagan governor - twice - and then turned around and replaced him with Jerry Brown, arguably one of the most liberal governors in American history.

Personally, I live in an area with a slight Republican majority, but which hasn't sent a Republican to the House since the 1940's. Our major population centers around LA and SF tend to be pretty far to the left, but across the rest of the state our Democrats tend to be a little more conservative than average, while the Republicans tend to be a little more liberal. These dynamics give our state some funny tendencies come election day, so while the state as a whole is definitely to the left of the rest of the nation, it really isn't "safe" for either party.

4. Well, star power or not, no one will ever convince me that
we elected a sexual molester for governor. There are many unanswered questions about that "election".
