I also thought it was EXTREMELY foolish... (Let me explain before you flame me)
When I realized that a protester was the reason Shrub was talking over the chants of "four more years" (thinking at first that he may have been stepping on his applause lines even more than Kerry had), I was TERRIFIED! I actually held my breath and couldn't move a muscle as he paused while the protester was dragged out. The reason? If Bush had made some witty off-the-cuff comment (or even one that just SEEMED spontaneous), rather than simply stumbling over the next line from his script, it would have brought the entire house down more that anything he had previously said and it would have become one of the highlights of the night. It could even have become an "I paid for this microphone" or "There you go again" sort of moment that would have been replayed over and over and over, possibly even giving Bush a few points in the polls. With Card being heckled earlier today, I am actually SURPRISED Rove did not program him with a few great zingers, just in case.
The second time it happened I knew he hadn't been prepared for it, but feared that, in a completely atypical moment of creativity, he may even come up with something on his own. Argue all you want about his lack of intelligence, the man definitely has his moments of quick wit, and I'm sure he was trying to think of SOMETHING to say. Fortunately all gears were engaged trying to remember which side the other teleprompter was on. ;) Hopefully he'll wake up a few nights thinking "I should have said..."!
I applaud their determination, but nevertheless, IMHO it was a risky, RISKY move.
