WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Sport utility vehicle (SUV) registrations in Kentucky increased 45 percent between 1997 and 2002, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. SUV registrations jumped from 205,000 in 1997 to 296,600 in 2002.

The 2002 Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) report for Kentucky includes information on fuel efficiency, annual mileage, primary range of operation, permanent equipment and other physical and operational characteristics. Data are for pickup trucks, SUVs, minivans, and all other single-unit trucks and truck-tractors.

5. Oh, my God - I'm a statistic
I just bought my first SUV - in Kentucky - oh, the shame of it all. How will I face my neighbors?

Of course, it is four years old, a 4 cyl, 4 wheel drive, gas saving, cute as a bug's ear Kia Sportage - not exactly your luxury vehicle. On the road yesterday I got 29 mpg. So maybe I'm not consigned to automotive purgatory yet.

BTW - first time in my life I have ever owned a foreign made car. Thought long and hard - but it was a real deal and I've enjoyed driving the thing.

2. Every SUV pink slip ought to come with a registration form for
the military.

Let people fight for their extra oil consumption.

It seems the only way some are going to "get it"

4. I'd be curious how that's been affected the last year or so.
I think we'll see a sharp decrease with the price of gasoline being what it is.

6. Well, the most current auto sector update isn't encouraging
Experts say Michigan's long- struggling economy is likely to take an unwelcome hit from new auto production cuts that General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have announced.

The state could lose as many as 6,000 jobs to temporary and permanent layoffs as the production cuts hurt the sales of suppliers and other businesses dependent on those automakers, economist Sean McAlinden said Thursday.

<snip>

The likely effects are declining home and retail sales, fewer meals eaten in restaurants and shrinking state tax revenues.

<snip>

But the biggest adjustments are at GM and Ford, which lost ground all year to foreign automakers. McAlinden said production cutbacks at those two automakers likely will result in the loss of at least 2,000 Michigan jobs and as many as 6,000, depending on the level of sales for the remainder of the year.
