Dear Sen Kerry:
I agree with you that this is the most important election in my lifetime. I believe this President's administration is one of the most politically and personally corrupt in our history. It represents a far greater threat to our Constitution than Nixon ever dreamed.
While I will vote for you no matter what you say or do, there is a growing problem about your position on Iraq. With respect, you seem to be saying, "you support a war you were misled into". Which opens you to the now familiar canard "you voted for before you voted against".
Here is what I would like you to say:
"About a month ago I was challenged by President Bush. It was to say whether, knowing as I know today that there were no MWDs, no Nuclear threat, and knowing that the President would invade Iraq, would I still vote to give him the authority I did. I replied I would. Just as I gave him my vote for Afghanistan. Why did I say that?
Because on 911, as now, we really don't know who or where our enemies are. We know they are Moslem and come from the Middle East. And if we are to effectively fight them we must do so in the Middle East. This is a ruthless enemy determined to drive us out of the Middle East where our vital interests are now, and for the foreseeable future. Why Iraq? Because Saddam was an anti-American dictator who would certainly have encouraged and funded these terrorists and have given them the knowledge to make MWDs. Therefore, though I would have done the whole thing very differently, and I believe would have had greater options, ultimately both the President and I would have gone to the same place.
"But the President has seized on this one thing we agree on to imply we agree on everything. We don't. This is not a matter of policy. It is a matter of political and military competence. And certainly this President has demonstrated his incompetence in both areas. Here is what I would have done.....""( Where Senator, I respectfully bow out).
Now DUs you can agree with this. Disagree. And more important, improve on it. But this is where I stand.
