1. it's a great video ! Extremely well done.
The imagery is exceptional and the message to vote and turnout the vote is powerful. It basically speaks to us !

4. Oh God :(
look we've spent the last three years knowing that he was anti-homosexual, pro violence. Now he says something to be "popular" with the in-crowd. Honestly i think eminem doesn't give a crap about politics. I think hes a joke, and if we can forgive three years of his hate speech we may as well forgive *.

5. Get over his early views on gays, his background dictates a level of hate
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 12:17 AM by sleipnir
Show me one hetero male who hasn't once made derogatory comments towards gays and I'll show you a liar.

His comments weren't appropriate, but perhaps you have no idea of a homosexual life is viewed for his background. I'm not saying that view is right, as certainly it's not, but really, from his background being gay is as bad as a Christian female in Saudi Arabia is to a Fundie Muslim.

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with him at all, but really until you've seen the environment he's grown up in (and damn it, I have) and known people from that background, you have no idea what a pariah gays are in that world. It's no shock that he would deride against them in his early music.

I admit that I've made several derogatory comments about gays earlier in my life, I've come to end that behavior.

6. Blindness
if a man insults me for years, then suddenly says one thing that makes a little sense, i think its sensible for me to not believe him. As a gay man i applaud you for your maturity in changing your social/sexual commentary. But when a public figure suddenly makes a statement after doing nothing but promote negative behaviours and stereotypes, im not going to be inclined to suddenly lock my arms with him and dance into the sunset.

I believe in the potential of change, and my jury is still strongly undecided in believing eminems sudden decision to be a productive citizen.

9. I understand your position.
Eminem is a odd man who I feel has matured a great deal over the last few years. It wasn't until I got to college and finally became good friends with homosexual males that I realized the comments I made to gays in High School were highly inappropriate and dangerous. I believe the same might be true for Marshall Mathers, he's finally realized that the world is larger than his patch of racist, homophobic Michigan. Perhaps, he'll come to understand that no matter what you sexual preference, we're all human and American.

Also, he's been after Bush Co for several years. He's made statements against them and some of his lyrics from the last album hint at his views. Yes, this is the first bold face type attack he's laid at Bush, but I think we should do what all of us espouse as liberals. Accept him into our Big Tent and help him learn to love and not hate. I know how cheesy that sounds, but we should work to heal and unite, and accept those who might have had divisive views in the past and try to educate them towards the greater goals of a decent society.

7. getting out on a limb here, I am...
but what little I heard of Enimen and his 'hateful' words, was just story telling, is all... real life and incidents and accidents of real people.

I could thoroughly be wrong, but that's how I see it.

8. like many rappers he has an alter-ego
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 12:26 AM by rockydem
he calls 'Slim Shady' - a nasty hooligan who makes fun of everyone and everything, including himself...

When you listen to his albums it is clear when he's rapping as Slim Shady and when he's rapping as Marshall Mathers - he usually straight up tells you.

That being said - if you listen to his albums - you would know that he has often dealt with issues of class and race - and in 2002 on his 'Eminem Show' album he took several swipes at Bush's foreign policy.

He is serious. And he is a serious talent.

10. Geezers
Alright im not debating his talent...

Im not debating his right to entertain those who enjoy his music. Or for him to be as crazy and interesting as he can be. If you are entertained by stories of mushroom overdoses and mocking the idea of raping your mother, God Bless.

My opinion is that eminem is a joke, and because if his lyrics which alter-ego or not is a representation of something inside him. with that in mind i am not truly buying his conversion into becoming a productive citizen. God bless him if he does vote for Kerry.

hateful bullshit...but if he gets a million 18 to 21 year-olds interested in voting and it makes a difference in a state or two, I will consider a dispensation.

besides, somebody on the White House staff has got to stumble across that video and be righteously pissed off. For that I applaud him

A lot of people ask me.. stupid fuckin questions
A lot of people think that.. what I say on records
or what I talk about on a record, that I actually do in real life
or that I believe in it
Or if I say that, I wanna kill somebody, that..
I'm actually gonna do it
or that I believe in it
Well, shit.. if you believe that
then I'll kill you

- eminem

edit: i just noticed you mentioned you were gay. understandable why you don't like him. i have a gay friend who absolutely fucking loves him...he gets what eminem is doing, and he's got a good sense of humor about it. he's had a few gay friends ask him how he could like eminem, and he just tells them that he must be a "self-hating faggot" (his words, not mine)
