Two selections from the '20s'
1.Updated a bit, with a bit of ugly racism excised
"Democracy is that system of government under which the people, having 150,000,000 native-born adults to choose from, including thousands who are handsome and many who are wise, pick out a Bush to be head of state. It is as if a hungry man, set before a banquet prepared by master cooks and covering a table an acre in area, should turn his back upon the feast and stay his stomach by catching and eating flies"
2. Maybe his most famous passage ---
“.....that the American people, taking one with another, constitute the most timorous, sniveling, poltroonish, ignominious mob of serfs and goose-steppers ever gathered under one flag in Christendom since the end of the Middle Ages, and that they grow more timorous, more sniveling, more poltroonish, more ignominious every day."
