"Loony Tunes" (The London Telegraph attacks Meacher)
Of course, and as always, no rebuttal of the case made. Just smart-assed, dismissive quips:

Loony tunes

Michael Meacher, who served as a Labour minister until three months ago, made an extraordinary series of allegations in an article published yesterday. He began by accusing the US of seeking world domination - a routine charge in Left-wing circles - but then went several, rather unusual, stages further.

In discussing why the US went to war against Iraq, he argued that "the truth may be a great deal murkier" than is commonly thought. He suggested that the US government did nothing to prevent the attacks of September 11, and then - once they had begun to unfold - deliberately did nothing to intercept them. Mr Meacher asks: "Could US air security operations have been deliberately stood down on September 11? If so, why, and on whose authority?" Furthermore, "no serious attempt has ever been made to catch Bin Laden".

The gist of Mr Meacher's conclusion is that the US government was prepared to see thousands of its citizens murdered to provide a convenient excuse for a series of conquering wars. This is a most novel theory. We look forward to more articles by him: "Aliens: why they choose to live among us" or "The cabal of jealous starlets who killed Marilyn Monroe" and "The coded Confederate message in the Gettysburg Address."

And from another piece in the Sunday Telegraph:
"Meacher allegations over September 11 'monstrous', says US":

...

"One senior Whitehall aide said last night: 'It's the stuff of fantasy. It's not like him to say something so stupid.' A minister with close links to Downing Street disagreed, saying: 'The only mystery is why we kept him in government for so long.'"

Anyone need a refresher on The Telegraph's links to Richard Perle?

1. What garbage. Does Murdoch own the Telegraph too?
I know it's the traditional Tory broadsheet.

8. The Telegraph is owned by Hollinger (sorry, can't remember his 1st name)
Who is a long time associate of Richard Perle. I looked up all this stuff quite some time ago, and my memory of the details is a bit fuzzy, but I think Perle is a member of Hollinger's board.

A quick google of "Perle Hollinger Telegraph" should net some useful information for those who may be interested.

10. Hollinger's the company -- guy is Conrad Black
well, Lord Black after Blair sucked up to him. He owns a shed-load of Canada's papers as well as the UK Telegraph (or "Tory-graph") & the Jerusalem Post amongst others. You're right about Perle; he's on Hollinger's board along with Kissinger.

Black's a nasty ultra right-wing fuckup who spent his time in Canada towing a "Canada should be the 51st state" line, ultimately renouncing his Canadian citizenship after a massive bustup with Chretien after he tried to sue the Canadian government.

Anyway -- what I'm basically saying is that Black is a **** & I wouldn't touch the pages of the Telegraph with a bargepole. Black's latest mission is to go full-steam ahead against the BBC. A taster of his vile toungue, from a recent Guardian:

"The media baron Lord Black yesterday launched an startling attack on sections of the British media, accusing the BBC of being the 'greatest menace facing the country it was founded to serve and inform', and even singling out one of his own senior editors for criticism.

The owner of the Telegraph group of newspapers used a letter in the Daily Telegraph to claim that the row over the alleged sexing up of intelligence about Iraq was being used by the BBC to try to 'destroy and supplant the Government'.

Lord Black of Crossharbour rounded on the Tory MP Boris Johnson - editor of the Spectator magazine and a columnist for the Daily Telegraph - accusing him of perpetrating a 'whitewash' in his defence of the BBC.

'Where Boris Johnson and the Tories go badly wrong is they don't recognise the present news and public affairs service of the BBC as a greater enemy to them and all they believe in than the Government,' he wrote. "

5. Lame responses
These links are to lame-ass responses from people who should know better. Meacher is bloody correct and nothing those fools ever say or do will be able to disprove his stance. Godspeed Mr. Meacher.

13. Perle is a Director of Hollinger
and Co-Chair of "Hollinger Digital," which is the media management and investment arm of Hollinger. The Telegraph is a Hollinger Company.
