Bush speech tomorrow night to include serious warnings about Iran
Here's Michael Rivero's statement at the top of his whatreallyhappened.com website:

"LATEST WORD IS THAT BUSH'S SUNDAY NIGHT SPEECH WILL INCLUDE A "SURPRISE" ANNOUNCEMENT THAT IRAN IS CLOSE TO BUILDING AN ATOMIC BOMB. BUSH HOPES THAT THIS NEW "THREAT" OF IRAN'S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION WILL DISTRACT AMERICANS FROM THE LIES ABOUT IRAQ'S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION."

If Bush actually does this (I have my doubts), this is certain to backfire. The electorate is waking up and won't be fooled again, I think. Not like they were before. And especially the media, they will be quick to criticize if Bush starts lieing about Iran's nuclear capabilities.

6. Iranian war would be an absolute disaster
even the neocon dim-wits must realize this. Im thinking they may try to create a cold war scenario. And then run on the idea that only Bush can keep America strong enough to win it... thats pretty weak though, they are in a bit of a corner.

Very very wrong. I think you've been spending too much time at DU.

Talk to people on the street.

I've seen Pizzas here named after Bush. And the other day I heard two people talking about how Iraq "deserved it" because of "what they did on 9/11".

He's got a good 50% solid support base of the country right now at least IMO, and I don't mean "50% of the population". But his support base goes that high because of the power he and his followers have.

15. Check the polls today
He's got a good 50% solid support base of the country right now

Have you seen all the polling results released yesterday and today? Bush has dropped quite a bit. Zogby has him at 45% approval, and CNN (I think) has him at 52% approval. These are significant drops. There has just been no "leveling out" yet on his approval rating - he's been in freefall ever since a few days after raining bombs on Hussein's supposed hideout at the start of the war.

17. You misread my post...
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 11:21 PM by Trek234
I said he didn't have 50% in sheer numbers. Yes, in that aspect he probably has less.

However the power that his supporters do have brings him over 50% in a measure of power over the opposition.

I don't know what "a good 50% solid support base of the country" means. The only numbers I follow are approval and re-elect. When you talk about "the power that his supporters do have", I agree that many of Bush's supporters ARE rich and powerful. And yes, that is a problem, but that problem has already been reflected in the poll results.

12. the military
will not go along with another war.there will be an open revolt among the military, they know they are in no position to fight another war. we were lucky that the iraqi`s folded otherwise we would have lost alot of troops on that "drive to bagdad". the irains do have the ability to do alot of damage to our forces on the ground and in the air. won`t happen, but it will get alot of people scared...

16. With what military? The Guard and Reserves would have to be
FULLY mobilized to take on Iran. After that, it's draft time because there's nothing left.

On a side note, a few weeks ago on NPR I heard some guy from the Clinton Administration say that we needed 400,000 troops MINIMUM to take on North Korea and that was in 1995. See above comment about where to get the troops.

20. not to mention
that Iran isnt iraq. They actually have friends in the middle east. Saddam was no ones favorite, attacking islamic Iran would be a bird of different color. And at that point I can imagine syria getting desperate and joining the fray. Attacking Iran could throw the entire middle east into war. If that happens isreal will be under attack and they have nukes. The neocons are crazy, but I dont think they are that crazy. We would forget about vietnam and have a new benchmark for disasterous wars.

22. not gonna use much military
just a few planes. The neocons gonna get a chance to get their rocks off big time by dropping a nuke or two. That is if they are fast enough to beat Israel.

26. Not likely
If we drop a few bombs I imagine iran might just decide that our troops in iraq might make a good target for thier weapons. And there is no way we will drop nukes.

25. You are right, we don't have the military strength to attack Iran
Even if the UN were to bless such an adventure, which I seriously doubt, we don't have the military capability to intervene in Iran. We don't have enough forces to cover our commitments in Korea, Iraq, and elsewhere. We would have to start a major military mobilization, which would bring our economy crashing down overnight.

Bush was more interested in his personal vendetta with Saddam that he paid little attention to what was going on in Iran.

23. Boy who cried wolf. Instead of Iraq, something probably should have
done to discourage the country that could pose a threat. Iran may now be in a position to dismiss any attempts to reign them in as threats from a world armed with a pop-gun.

Will people who don't pay attention say Iran really poses a threat, so Iraq must have too? Or will they hoot at any weapons claim Bush makes?

24. The Boy who Cried Wolfowitz
"Fool me once, shame on.. shame on you. Ya fool - ya can't get fooled again!"

Problem for Bush is, most Americans actually do know that old saying.

Ironically, the evidence does suggest Iran has a nuclear weapons program. However, the greatest sponsor of Iran's weapons program has been Bush's "Axis of Evil," "with us or against us" Manichean trash talk.

I would like to give the Bush gang at least some credit for being politically saavy enought to avoid gettting us prepped for a war with Iran.

I just dont think folks are going to fall for this any more.
