Pop up ads here at DU
Am I seeing things? When going to the DU home page an ad opens in another window. A few times it has been for Wal-Mart! Can this be? Or am I missing something? I realize the fiscal realities of life, but for DU to have Wal-Mart ads seems a bit confusing........can anyone help me understand how this occurs?
Thanks! :)

2. I hate pop-up ads
They're just a slimy way of getting a product in front of people. It's annoying to have to click to close them.

Did DU contract with Wal-Mart for these ads? If DU is being paid by Wal-Mart, then that will obviously help with their much needed fundraising, even though the pop-ups are annoying. But some companies have just attached their pop-ups to different sites without the site's consent.

7. Popup Killer
there's a free version. Then get Spy Sweeper (also a free version) to get past Killer changing your homepage (it also helps a lot with spyware).

Its worth losing homepage just to stop that crap but you don't even have to with the other package.

We can fight back !

3. It Might be Triggered by Exiting Another Site
I know that Yahoo does this. When you leave Yahoo for another page, you often get a pop up.

4. DU will tell you that they just contract with an agency.
DU will tell you that they just contract with an agency and
collect a feww for each pop-up ad siplayed (one per day, I
believe).

That response is, actually, just the logical converse of what
you get when you complain to companies that advertise on RW shows:
"We just contract the air time; we have no say on where our ads
run." DU says: "We just sell ad space: we have no control over
who runs ads in that space."

"Yeah, right!" on both counts.

5. If you want to avoid popup ads
Add the Google Toolbar to your browser - the toolbar blocks popups and it's free from Google.com

11. Yes, IE truly and magnificently reeks.

A big 10-4 on that. Opera and Mozilla (basis for Netscape 7.1) are heads and shoulders better than IE. Proof that competition is a good thing. Too bad most of the country is using the crappy browser, thanks to Mr. Gates' monopolistic business practices and his friends in high places.

8. Or run Mozilla. Or, on Mac's only, run Safari. (NT)

9. Use Netscape 7.1 or Mozilla browser - no more pop ups
and it's free. I love this browser.
