"It's important for the world to see America have a peaceful transition of government".....so said George Bush in an interview just ended on CNN! This is part of his "we are bringing freedom and peace to the world", bullshit, I guess....I don't know how often I have heard this administration say words infering that every other country except the United States changes government by means of violence and fire power! My God....Is he really unaware of the peaceful democracies all around the world?...(Including one just north of America's borders!)....This is another thing that pisses off the world about him!

1. Absolutely. I am disgusted by the caricature of democracy we've
become.

3. Shhhh,
I need to update you on the plot to overthrow Paul Martin. Talk quietly so no one can hear us.

But it sometimes seems that Bush has taken every "Ugly American" lesson ever offered. He's steeped in mythology without ever learning the factual context for his myths.

Or is he playing to the house (or a large portion of the house)?

5. "we are bringing freedom and peace to the world"
via The War on Terra presumably.

Alas, the battle for hearts & minds still seems to be in dispute.
Perhaps it's time for a War on Democracy (if that hasn't already started).

BTW how's the War on Drugs going?

6. Seriously, you know what it's like?
It's like the person who hasn't looked in the mirror with a critical eye lately and still thinks of himself as twenty years younger and thirty pounds lighter.

The US is living off its self image, not reality.

off. Hope this message reaches you in time to fix.

10. we are NOT trying to bring democracy to them...
We are trying to bring capitalism that our corporations will be able to take advantage of. Look at democratically elected governments that we have been involved with before..

13. Me, too. All of a sudden, we have the "marca registrada" on democracy.
It bothers me to no end.

15. I'll give Bush this much ...

Though he would NOT be happy to hear this from me. There IS a subset of the US population which is trying to show the rest of the world how to resist a fascist takeover of its society -- how to keep democratic values alive under a merciless onslaught -- and they are the ones who inspire me. I am thinking of our friend Kef, who we now realize spent the last years of his life trying to create a place like DU to educate and organize the loyal opposition. And Mari in Michigan, and too many others here, who've seen their loved ones sent overseas and have suffered terribly as Bush and his buddies cram their pockets with the birthright of the American people. And the guy (I forget his name) who was cussed out by other drivers just for having a Kerry-Edwards sticker in a "red state". And the hundreds of DUers who reported being mocked and ostracized at holiday gatherings by members of their own families, just for telling the truth about what's going on in the world.

So, my thoughts are with the Americans who are trying to bring freedom and peace to their own nation!

17. I agree with what you say....except I wouldn't give Bush ANYTHING!
What you are describing is not what he is talking about. He hasn't a clue what democracy means....I too admire the wonderful Americans like the DUers who are working to make things right....And they are so generous in their acceptance of non-Americans' opinions and suggestions....Bless them all!

16. Dunno I am sick of
our leaders referring to us as a democracy. We aren't. Representative republic ring a bell? Of course we aren't really that anymore either. :(
