HANNON, Ireland, Sept. 8 — With costs and casualties rising in the war on terrorism, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld struck back today at the administration's widening circle of critics, saying they were complicating an already difficult task.

Mr. Rumsfeld did not mention any of the domestic critics by name. Since when did this get "difficult"? All I've heard so far was about what a cakewalk this was and is, and how any perceived "setbacks" are nothing more than the military getting its hair mussed.

Is Rumsfeld admitting that things are not all beer and skittles for the military in Iraq? Doesn't he know how much that hurts the troops' morale to hear that the rear echelon people think they're not doing a perfectly stellar job?
