First they came for Bert and Ernie
...and I said nothing because I was not a Muppet.

Then they came for Tinky Winky, and I said nothing, because I was not a Teletubby.

Then they came for Sponge Bob and Patrick, and I said nothing, because I was not an asexual cartoon sea creature.

I'm just wondering who'll be the next target of the Righteous Conservative Wrath Against Imaginary Creatures...

136. More FUNNY
When the Nazis arrested the Communists,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a Communist.
When they locked up the Social Democrats,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a Social Democrat.
When they arrested the trade unionists,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a trade unionist.
When they arrested the Jews, I said nothing; after all, I was not a Jew.
When they arrested me, there was no longer anyone who could protest.

206. Actually, it's not funny... if you're gay, or care about anybody who is.
I know, nobody meant anything bad, but for some of us, this issue is no laughing matter. Yeah, i smiled when i read it, but then a little sinking feeling set in.

When you have a 2 y.o. and a 4 y.o., you get to know Elmo pretty well . . . and yeah, I'm suprised they haven't attacked him yet, but I think it's because he refers to himself in the third person like Bob Dole.

174. This is way too touchy-feely to be repug
It's not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold...
or something much more colorful like that.

It's not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ord'nary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky.

But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain,
or tall like a tree.

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.

84. I know a person who knew him when she was little.
She said he was as kind and gentle in real life as he was on his shows. Her father worked in the same church as Fred Rodgers. She was totally aghast at the Navy Seal story which is a urban legend.

My 22 year old son grew up with Mr. Rodgers. He watched him on PBS from time time even as an adult.

68. Michael Savage trashed Mr. Rogers THE DAY HE DIED.
He was saying how "Mr. Rogers was not a good role model for young boys and should have talked to them more about self-defense and playing more sports, etc: All of this was veiled code of course for "Mr Rogers was gay." I remember cursing Scumbag Savage under my breath and thinking "this man is not human".

193. God Hates Mr. Rogers
From The Black Table Interview with Fred Phelps:

http://www.blacktable.com/daulerio030401.htm

<snip>

BT: I guess it is. Let's talk about the Mr. Rogers protest. I didn't think Mr. Rogers was gay?

FRED: Well, I don't know if he's gay or not but he's one of the foremost proponents of 'It's OK to be Gay.' And from the church he got ordained by and the Presbyterian church he goes to in Pittsburgh which is one of the few boldly fag-promoting churches, that's one of the few.

You've got a guy (Mr. Rogers) who has got millions of children's ears and he says he's gonna shoot straight to them about the weighty matters of life, death, divorce -- and then he steps gingerly around the fact that if you mess with that fag lifestyle you gonna split hell wide open.

BT: Well, he never came out and said that on the show, though, as far as I know…

FRED: Well, no he never came out and told children to experiment with homosexual sex like his compadres do. His compadres being The National Education Association and PBS network. They urge you that it's okay to be gay.

BT: This was the interesting thing about one of the Rogers picket press releases I saw: You had a picture of the image of the Twin Towers after the planes hit, the crew of the Columbia Space Shuttle Tragedy, I believe it was Saddam Hussein and Mr. Rogers petting a cat.

FRED: (laughing) Petting a cat…

BT: Yes. Petting a cat. Now, are you insinuating that Mr. Rogers caused all of those things…

FRED: They died for his sins.

BT: They died for his sins, yes…now, are you…

FRED: Look, he went straight to hell. If everybody in the world is holding some candlelight vigil and catawalling about what a wonderful guy he was using the event of his death to preach propaganda lies from the devil and hell, why should it seem strange for an old time Baptist preacher to say 'Wait a moment please…"?

He's in hell. And if you're putting out cartoons depicting that he's in heaven, you've got no basis for it. Do you want to make the argument that he's in heaven?

BT: No, not me!

FRED: But, most of those guys talking don't even believe in heaven…

BT: But, it's Mr. Rogers. Everybody likes Mr. Rogers and all of the good he's brought to

the world and I think that's why people are bristling a little more this time around.

FRED: Well, we picketed Barry Goldwater's funeral in Tempe and they were making the same sounds.

BT: The same sounds?

FRED: Yeah, the same sounds like they're doing for Rogers talking about what a wonderful guy he was. And we all just told Moynihan that we'd be picketing his funeral because he put that fag, that dyke Deborah Batz on the Federal Bench.

19. Just leave Weenie the Genie and Horatio J. Hoo Doo alone
please

When Mark arrives, he is thrown into prison where he meets Weenie, a turbaned genie (Billie Hayes). Together, they escape, and then Mark helps Weenie and a group of friendly hats battle the gang of evil hats (executioner's hood, gangster's hat, Raunchy Rabbit Hat etc.) controlled by Horatio J. Hoo Doo, a nasty, green-skinned magician (played by Charles Nelson Reilly) who constantly thwarted Mark attempts to return to his own world. Mark had rescued the inept but well-meaning, Weenie from Hoo Doo by stealing the sorcerer's magic ring which gave the owner (Hoo Doo) the power to control Weenie the Genie as a slave.

Side note - I didn't actually think the video is worthy of being distributed for kids to be taught acceptance. It just seemed like a big commercial for Disney, Nick Jr. - etc.

I'm an alienated moderate Republican looking for sanity from the Democrats since the (R) in Republican now stands for 'Rapturist Right'. Since the spend-n-spend Koolaid drinkers have taken over my party, I'm looking for signs of intelligent life. How about you?

DU has been a great resource and I'm really glad I found this site.

148. Linus quotes Bible verses.
Every time the Religious Wingnuts go off the deep-end about the media surpressing religion on TV, I think about Linus' Bible quote in "Merry Xmas Charlie Brown" which has run every year on TV, un-censored, since 1964.

Peppermint Patty, and her lesbian friend Marcie who calls everyone "Sir", are of growing concern though. What was once called "Tomboy" in 1964, is "bull dyke" today.

The change in these "social labels" is more of an indictment of the Right's growing break with reality than in a wish to return to "early American values". :silly:

you know, one of the ones who actually believed in following the Gospels and all that love-thy-neighbor stuff - one who read his Bible, instead of just thumping on it.

My husband has a great story about a Charles Schulz cartoon that appeared in one of his church newsletters when he was a kid. It shows a person leafing through the Bible. Someone else asks him what he's looking for. He says, "I'm looking for the passages that support my preconceived notions."

198. The truth in that cartoon has resonated with me for 40 years

It was Linus sitting at a table flipping through the bible. Charlie Brown walks up behind him, and watches him flip pages for a minute, and then says.
"What are you doing, Linus?"
To which linus replies,
"Oh, I'm just looking for some scriptures to support my preconcieved beliefs."

49. Don't forget Pikachu and Harry Potter
The Fundies seem to be after the newer cartoon characters. Maybe Blue from "Blue's Clues" could be a potential target because Blue is a blue dog(hence the name) but is female.

Yu-Gi-Oh!, Duel Masters, or any other Japanese anime targeted toward kids in the U.S(Yu-Gi-Oh! is aimed at teens in Japan, but got heavily watered down when it was dubbed to target children) is a potential target.

Wait! what about Dragontales! The fundies are gonna say it encourages kids to make friends with "demonic reptiles"!

74. ...and now I'm thinking about Yogi Bear
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 09:33 PM by geniph
because just what the hell WAS the relationship between him and ButtBoy, or BooBoo, or whatever the hell the little bear's name was? Were they members of the NABLBCA (North American Bears Loving Bear Cubs Association) or what?

See, what brought that to mind is that I've been trying to figure out the mindset of anyone who'd be looking for this kind of sexual subtext in Teletubbies, or Muppets, or Spongebobs. I think their basic premise is that the cartoons aren't showing "normal" dyadic nuclear families, with a mommy and a daddy. But I can only think of a handful of cartoons that have - the Jetsons, the Flintstones, the Simpsons - the ones that are actually ABOUT a family. All the Disney cartoons have at least one parent getting whacked early on, or else you've got Donald and Daisy Duck shacking and presenting an indecent example for the little nephew ducks. I don't think any of the Warner Brothers cartoons had any kind of family. Bullwinkle and Rocky? Were there any females of their own species? Was there any female other than Natasha?

We never realized how insidious and long-lasting this homosexual agenda has been! My god, they've been after us for decades! It must be working - WE'RE ALL GAY! Even those of us that don't know it yet.

...hey...isn't Dobson a baby boomer, too?

At the end of "Rabbit of Seville", Bugs and Elmer get married, Elmer's in a white bridal dress. At the end of "What's Opera Doc?", they get married again with Bugs dressed as Brunhilda.

And Bugs was forever kissing Elmer, or Yosemite Sam, or Porky Pig, or Daffy Duck, all male characters.

The homosexual agenda has been around a lot longer than I realized! It's no wonder I'm such a pervert! It's all Bugs Bunny's fault!

CONSTANCE CUMBY "CLEANSED" IN "HARMONIC CONVERGENCE"

SPEAKS THROUGH "TRANCE CHANNEL"

Acapulco, Mexico (EPA), Aug 18, 1987

Spectators in this popular resort area were shocked yesterday when Funda-
mentalist author Constance Cumby, known for her anti-"New Age" bestsellers
"Rainbows from Hell" and "Hidden Dangers of the Care Bears," fell into a
crevice filled with molten lava.

Ms. Cumby had come to Acapulco to protest what she described as "harmonics and
all other forms of humanism" and to organize a demonstration against the
planting of crystals here by devotees of "New Age" beliefs. At the time of
her death, Ms. Cumby was exhorting her audience to counter the "fiendish
influence of rocks" by burying photographs of Nancy Reagan "and other heros of
normalcy." She was brandishing what appeared to be a can of deodorant in the
direction of the New Age believers when the mysterious crevice opened at Ms.
Cumby's feet, swallowing her, several cartons of her books, and a rack
displaying plush unicorns and Smurf dolls bearing labels such as "Belial" and
"Ashtoreth." Eyewitnesses say that Ms. Cumby screamed "It's the rapture!"
immediately before the fissure closed over her with a noise that several of
them compared to belching.

Ms. Cumby's death stirred controversy in both the New Age encampment and among
her followers.

"She really did get raptured," insisted Olivetta Beehive, a Milwaukee repre-
sentative of Mary Kay Cosmetics, "even if she went down instead of up." But a
member of the New Age group insisted that Ms. Cumby had not been raptured but
"cleansed." To this claim, Ms. Beehive responded that "She didn't need to get
cleansed. She was so clean already."

who were not muppets, dolls or cartoons.

And when the gays got taken, they took the gay supporters, and when those were done they took all people who commited anything the fundies considered a religious crime, by the time the swearers, smokers, people who had unmarried sex, criminals, and people rumored to not be fundie enough were gone, they started taking each other.

And in their quest for God, they became satan. And after killing all the "bad" people, in the end, only murders were left.

And the secret is, the people who did it all, were murders to begin with.

...he had a girlfriend, Rosie Cotton, that he eventually married and had children with.

Now Merry and Pippen on the other hand....

(in his best Church Lady voice...."Merry, now isn't that just another word for.....GAY!?"

190. January 27, 2005 will mark the 60th anniversary...
...of the liberation of Auschwitz.

I find the opening message to this thread to be in very poor taste; the timing makes it worse. It's not funny; it's crass.

191. The timing is actually very good!
You do know that Hitler sent people to concentration camps for being homosexual, don't you?
As we remember Auschwitz, we must make sure something like that never happens again...

192. HOMOSEXUALS: VICTIMS OF THE NAZI ERA
HOMOSEXUALS: VICTIMS OF THE NAZI ERA

<snip>

In 1934, a special Gestapo (Secret State Police) division on homosexuals was set up. One of its first acts was to order the police "pink lists" from all over Germany The police had been compiling these lists of suspected homosexual men since 1900. On September 1, 1935, a harsher, amended version of Paragraph 175 of the Criminal Code, originally framed in 1871, went into effect, punishing a broad range of "lewd and lascivious" behavior between men. In 1936 Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler created a Reich Central Office for the Combating of Homosexuality and Abortion: Special Office (II S), a subdepartment of Executive Department II of the Gestapo. The linking of homosexuality and abortion reflected the Nazi regimes population policies to promote a higher birthrate of its "Aryan" population. On this subject Himmler spoke in Bad Tölz on February 18, 1937, before a group of high-ranking SS officers on the dangers both homosexuality and abortion posed to
the German birthrate.

Under the revised Paragraph 175 and the creation of Special Office II S, the number of prosecutions increased sharply, peaking in the years 1937-1939. Half of all convictions for homosexual activity under the Nazi regime occurred during these years. The police stepped up raids on homosexual meeting places, seized address books of arrested men to find additional suspects, and created networks of informers to compile lists of names and make arrests.

An estimated 1.2 million men were homosexuals in Germany in 1928. Between 1933-45, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested as homosexuals, and of these, some 50,000 officially defined homosexuals were sentenced. Most of these men spent time in regular prisons, and an estimated 5,000 to 15,000 of the total sentenced were incarcerated in concentration camps.

<snip>

All prisoners of the camps wore marks of various colors and shapes, which allowed guards and camp functionaries to identify them by category. The uniforms of those sentenced as homosexuals bore, various identifying marks, including a large black dot and a large "175" drawn on the back of the jacket. Later a pink triangular patch (rosa Winkel) appeared.

<snip>

Many survivors have testified that men with pink triangles were often treated particularly severely by guards and inmates alike because of widespread biases against homosexuals. As was true with other prisoner categories, some homosexuals were also victims of cruel medical experiments, including castration. At Buchenwald concentration camp, SS physician Dr. Carl Vaernet performed operations designed to convert men to heterosexuals: the surgical insertion of a capsule which released the male hormone testosterone. Such procedures reflected the desire by Himmler and others to find a medical solution to homosexuality.

The vast majority of homosexual victims were males; lesbians were not subjected to systematic persecution. While lesbian bars were closed, few women are believed to have been arrested. Paragraph 175 did not mention female homosexuality. Lesbianism was seen by many Nazi officials as alien to the nature of the Aryan woman. In some cases, the police arrested lesbians as "asocials" or "prostitutes.:' One woman, Henny Schermann, was arrested in 1940 in Frankfurt and was labeled "licentious Lesbian" on her mug shot; but she was also a "stateless Jew," sufficient cause for deportation. Among the Jewish inmates at Ravensbrück concentration camp selected for extermination, she was gassed in the Bernburg psychiatric hospital, a "euthanasia" killing center in Germany, in 1942.

194. Keith Olbermann weights in on how stupid Dobson's sheeple are. . .
Even though he's on vacation this week, he's blogged (www.bloggermann.com). Seems he's been getting buried under e-mails from the Dobson folks:

"Before airing the video (on Countdown). . . I jokingly warned that if Dr. Dobson’s group was right, the video could turn you or your kids or your furniture gay. Or tolerant. The spam e-mails began coming in Tuesday night. They were pretty routine, damning me to eternal fires and reminding me what they “did” to Dan Rather and how I’d be next. But they were generated from Dobson’s own website, which of course negates their impact, and as a result a lot of them were downright hilarious. Something approaching 20 percent of them were simply blank. Others began with, or consisted entirely of, the preamble “(Please delete these words and type your own message here.)” Others referred to Dr. Dobson as Dr. Dobsin, Dr. Dobsen, or Mr. Dobbins. Many were cut-and-paste repetitions of one another, and about 20 percent were from false e-mail addresses. One particularly useful one included the actual instructions on the Website as to how to conduct the campaign."

216. That's totally not surprising...
I used to attend a small fundie church and the pastor circulated a petition around about some issue, forgot what it was, but the accompanying "news article" was from...and I'm not kidding...The Onion. It took a fair bit of persuasion on my part to clue him in on the fact that the Onion is a satire paper. I had to wait until I drove away to laugh. I didn't stick around there much longer...when you end up with an associate pastor who has audible "conversations" with God while driving his semi, it's time to run. Fast. The only issues they ever card about were abortion and gays. No mention of taking care of the environment or homeless or helping the less fortunate. Sorry, I want to follow Jesus, not barking moonbat woo-woos.

202. That was my whole point
trying to point out that, once again, an easy target is first. And the Nazis targeted gays early on, too.

Believe me, I'm the LAST person in the world to make light of that kind of suffering.

197. Most Gay? VeggieTales
I wonder what would happen if we began a mock campaign to save our kids from the obviously homosexual agenda of the Biblically-based "VeggieTales" series? I mean Larry the Cucumber? C'mon! We MUST keep our kids out of the produce section before they are corrupted by these gay evangelical vegetables!!!

203. By the way, if anyone wants to read a serious analysis of this,
a truly excellent analysis of what's really behind this kind of "easy" scapegoating of a cartoon character, I HIGHLY recommend this post from the Orcinus blog:

http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/
(arrow down to the post The Meaning of SpongeBob)

One brief excerpt:

Over at Focus on the Family's Website, this argument is made clearer:

Dr. Dobson is concerned that these popular animated personalities are being exploited by an organization that's determined to promote the acceptance of homosexuality among our nation's youth.

It's hard to say exactly which organization he's talking about. If you go over to the We Are Family Foundation -- the immediate object of Dobson's wrath -- it's pretty hard to find anything that even remotely mentions homosexuality. Moreover, if you click on the link to the "Tolerance Pledge" that Dobson says is the source of his allegation, you'll see that the pledge is actually the product of Tolerance.org, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In other words, Dobson appears to be attacking the SPLC by proxy. That should give people a little clearer picture of what we're really talking about here. Dobson isn't just condemning cartoon characters, he's attacking the basic concept of secular tolerance as a democratic cornerstone. That is, he's actively promoting the tolerance of intolerance. There's a simpler word for that: hate.

Hammer-Nail-Head, Mr. Neiwert, once again.

204. And don't forget Buster the Bunny
But then, Buster's crime is only that he actually runs across lesbians--in Vermont! (How very unusual....) See today's MSNBC story, "Education chief rips PBS for gay character," for the sordid details of the demise of an episode of "Postcards from Buster".

This entry is fantastic, though--thanks for a laugh on (yet another) day when one was desperately needed (don't know whether the latest news or the added layer snow is more to blame for the pervasive gloom here).

Or his alternate identity, Shoeshine Boy. He was nuts about Sweet Polly Purebred :P

Now, Tennessee Tuxedo might be a different story... ;)

It's fun to make jokes about this story, but it's sad to realize the people on the other side are taking this seriously...
