Regarding getting screamed at for having Dem. bumper stickers:
I once had the good fortune of hanging out with Ken Kesey and Hunter S. Thompson and a few deadheads at Kesey's farm in Oregon just as the first gulf war was beginning (it's a long story). This being Oregon there was a lot of protesting happening at the federal building in Eugene. Kesey was just talking and talking, amazing stuff. At one point he gets up from the kitchen table and goes back to this room and comes out with a large "Stop" sign. He explained that the night before he had driven over to the federal building in his old Chrysler convertible, drove past the pro-war people lined up on one side of the street and held up the stop sign. He went around the block and drove past the anti-war folks on the other side of the street and held up his stop sign. He did this for a while, alternating between the pro-war and anti-war folks.

He said that sticking your ass out there like these folks were doing is exactly what our government wants us to do so that they know where each of us stands at all times. He said that this was basically what "the bus thing" was all about in the 60's. They'd drive into some small town sitting on the roof playing recorders and looking so bizarre that folks didn't know what to make of it. He said that we would all be wise to follow "a middle road" and keep them guessing. I think he was pretty high that night, but at the time this rang true.

Myself, after the last election fraud I peeled all stickers off of my car. I was beginning to tire of being a potential target for narrow-minded cops, road ragers, parking lot vandals and the like. I did have a very unpleasant experience with some young asshole in a BMW a month before the fraudulent election. He had come up right on my ass at a stop light and threw me a double bird. I did nothing back. The light turned green and I calmly drove ahead. He zips around me and pulls up alongside and glares. Again, no response from me. He speeds off and it is just himself up ahead about 75 yards and me on this stretch of highway, so he begins to slow down so I can catch up to him. I slow down too. He got tired of it I guess and drove on ahead. I often picture him smashing his hand in his car door, or being pummeled by some very large liberal fellow who is sick of it. This helps.

I'll probably get a few flames here for not showing my support for the good guys as I drive around, but I get no road rage, no slabs of metal in my car tires.

4. Blue Stater with Stickers
I have not had any issues, and display a sticker on my car.
Funny, I went out with a Repub friend last night and parked next to her. She had her Bush sticker and I had my liberal sticker. When I pointed it out, she laughed and said "guess we cancel each other out". She takes a lot more ribbing for hers than I do, but it doesn't bother either of us, none of it is rude or violent (so far).
Great person, my repub friend. She was concerned for Bill Clinton's health, liked Kerry a bit, etc. I'd love to "sign her up", but she's deeply imbedded in her party (councilperson), and is truly conservative, not neocon, would never switch.
Is she the "compassionate conservative" we've heard about? I figured they had at least one.

6. I have some friends like that....
....but others are just mean and nasty when they talk politics. It's like they forget that we've known eachother for years. My Gosh, during the Swift Boat Veterans For (their made up)"Truth thing, they wouldn't stop. I had to quit reading their e-mails/taking their calls. It was pathetic.

Besides, they supported a proven liar. It seemed like disengenious BS and that they were severely separated from the truth.

5. speaking of Kesey stories . . .
when I was in college oh so many years ago, Kesey came to our campus for a speaking engagement . . . the students running the lecture/artist series assigned a really geeky freshman to escort him around campus, much to Kesey's dismay . . .

anyhow, that evening there was a cocktail party at the dean's house, and I happened to be outside when Kesey came out and, um, relieved himself behind a big oak tree . . . we struck up a conversation, and were chatting away when the freshman, fearful of losing his charge, came running up breathlessly . . . and stood right in the spot where Kesey has just pissed . . .

"Hey, man," says Kesey, "I just pissed there."

jumping back with a horrified look on his face, the freshman asks, in all seriousness, "Is it acid?" . . . :)

8. Good post!!
I have no bumper stickers on my car. I never quite got around to putting them on. I guess it's because I want to speak to someone who is actually listening!!

If some wingnut wants to know if I'm "with them or against them", he/she can fucking ASK me! That way, in the ensuing verbal battle, THEY are the one who "started it".

That said, I like the feeling I get when I see a bumper sticker that I agree with. Solidarity is important, too! I enjoy praising someone who has a good bumper sticker.
